The BET Awards has always been known for the top performances, surprising awards winners, and outstanding speeches that leave you in tears or laughing for days, (ie. Rick James). This year has been no different, however, there were still several memorable events that, again will forever remain in our minds. The BET Awards demands celebrities, media and fans to come in attendance in what many would call, their best, from red carpet appearances, which leads to the hot topic of, who would be the, “Best Dressed” or “Worst Dressed.” Understanding that this will be a known topic to be talked about for some time to come.

To be the host of the BET Awards is more than an honor of the year, it’s also when you are assigned to be more than just a host. Being prepared to entertain, stun and inspire the crowd in some form or another, is just a part of the requirements to holding such a position. It is your platform; your center stage to not only your immediate audience but the views around the world that are watching.

Jennifer Hudson

The 2016 BET Awards, granted the world with the Tribute to Prince that is still trending today, with performances from Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Janelle Monae, Usher, and Kendrick Lamar, but the most trending, compelling and emotional performance talked about was from Sheila E. herself. Prince has been a Legendary Icon for more than 30 years and a true humanitarian, working in silence for so many individuals and organizations. The rendition of  “Purple Rain”, performed by Jennifer Hudson, was the example of soulfulness and powerful combined. However, no one was prepared for what Jesse Williams had for everyone while giving his mind-blowing acceptance speech. He not only spoke with strength but he spoke the words that so many people today have been crying out to both hear and say, but who’s voices have been silenced in some way.

Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar

The BET Awards show opener has always been know for introducing the world to what’s expected and possibly seen that night. This year was no different. Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar’s performance to open the show is one that was both creative and entertaining, to say the least. The thought and creativity put into the formation of the dancers, the customs, the pool of water on stage, and the entrance of both Beyonce and Kendrick, was full of meaning. Singing a powerful duet, both amazing artist brought “Freedom” to life and the audience quickly was pulled in as well. Beyonce truly gained a standing ovation by combining tribal dance to the beginning performance and maintaining this theme with extreme and initiative lyrics, followed by Kendrick Lamar showing the power in words standing strong. Combined with standing ovations and extended applause received by everyone, this performance started the award show off just as it should have, as a hit. With several artist gracing the stage with their presences, speeches, and performances, the BET Awards was one to remember. The expectations of the BET Awards will always remain to be a highlight that draws the attention of millions around the world and will always continue to leave us with an emotional roller-coaster and special memories to last for more than just that night.
