An engagement ring is one of the most beautiful, romantic, and sentimental pieces of jewelry you’ll ever receive. If you’ve been with your partner for a long time, you’re likely already discussing marriage and your future together.

Of course, you want your engagement ring to suit your personal style and tastes. With many different setting styles, metals, and diamond shapes, there are endless combinations of rings out there – so the thought of your partner not getting it right can be a little nerve-wracking. While some couples will shop for the ring together, some prefer for the proposal to be an absolute surprise.

Before you start dropping hints about your dream ring, do research on it to make sure it’s absolutely what you want. You may be surprised which rings and diamond shapes are better for your tastes and lifestyle. For example, if you’re a very active person, you may want to avoid diamonds with sharp points, such as the pear-cut, marquise-cut, and princess-cut. These sharp points can easily chip. Instead, try a round-cut, oval-cut, or cushion-cut diamond. Those with active lifestyles should also consider bezel settings. This type of setting features metal that fully surrounds the diamond. It’s the most secure type of setting. If you’re looking for a sparkly diamond, you may want to avoid emerald-cuts or Asscher-cuts. These step-cut diamonds feature subtle flashes of light rather than sparkle. However, you can choose a halo or side stone setting to add extra sparkle to your ring.

It’s also important in general to research on different types of setting styles so that you can hint at exactly what you want. For example, some people say they want a “simple” engagement ring, but “simple” is really subjective – is a solitaire engagement ring what you mean by simple or a side stone engagement ring? Knowing exact terms will help you get exactly what you’re looking for.

Once you’ve done your research to confirm your dream ring is right for you, try these five sneaky ways to drop a hint to your partner about your dream engagement ring:

  1. Give Clues With Commentary

Take advantage of celebrities (or your friends) getting engaged. Make observations to your partner on their rings, for example, “I absolutely love her ring! Princess cut engagement rings are so unique!” Or “I like halo engagement rings, but I would prefer an oval-cut diamond rather than a round-cut.” If you’re commenting on someone’s ring who you know, do it in private – you wouldn’t want to offend the wearer! Your significant other will (hopefully) make a mental note of your preferences and will remember them when it’s time to buy a ring.

Alternatively, watch a movie or TV show with your significant other where you know an engagement is bound to happen. You can share what you like or don’t like about the ring that you see.

  1. Point To Pinterest

Casually let your partner know that you have a Pinterest board with your dream engagement ring. You can also leave it up on your phone or computer. Tip: Make sure your Pinterest board is all cleaned up and refined – if you’ve had your Pinterest since high school, the rings on there may no longer be your style. The more specific your Pinterest board is, the easier it’ll be for your significant other to shop. Stick to rings that are of similar shapes, metals, and styles – if you have a yellow gold round-cut diamond ring, a rose gold oval-cut diamond ring, and a platinum emerald-cut ring on your Pinterest board, they may be confused which one you actually want.

  1. Phone A Friend

Let your close friends know exactly what type of ring you love. Be as specific as possible – if a 2-carat diamond ring is what you fancy, let them know! Your future fiancé may ask them for help ring shopping, or your friends can drop hints in conversation as to what your dream ring looks like.

  1. Send Signals With Window Shopping

When you go out shopping with bae, take a moment to look at the jewelry store displays together. Signal to your partner what you like (or don’t like) about the rings by making brief commentary about what’s on the display.

  1. Simply Send It

This option is a little more direct. Most online engagement ring stores allow you to “drop a hint” to your sweetheart. Find the ring you love, then enter their email. They’ll receive a link to the ring and get the hint.

Alternatively, follow some engagement ring Instagram accounts, and DM your partner your favorite ones, or tag them in the comments.

With these tips, you’ll be on your way to your dream engagement ring in no time.
