Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s 2017 Atlanta Engagement at the Fox Theatre Led by Artistic Director Robert Battle

 Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns during Black History Month to Atlanta’s Fabulous Fox Theatre, February 15 – 19 with timely works that shine a spotlight on social issues and celebrate the birth centennials of jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. The engagement features exciting world premieres, Robert Battle’s Ella, and Ailey dancer Hope Boykin’s r-Evolution, Dream., inspired by the sermons and speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We hope that you will be our guest at one of the performances on Wednesday, February 15 at 8 p.m. or Thursday, February 16 at 8 p.m.

Wednesday, February 15 AT 8 p.m. – Ailey Fan Night

  • Deep, Italian choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti’s elegant and soulful ensemble work set to the music of Ibeyi, twin sisters who sing in English and Yoruba and are rising global music stars.
  • Cry, Alvin Ailey’s signature female solo, made famous by Judith Jamison and dedicated to “all black women everywhere.”
  • The Hunt, Robert Battle’s powerful and thrilling work for six men.
  • Revelations, Alvin Ailey’s signature must-see American masterpiece.

Thursday, FEBRUARY 16 at 8 p.m. – Opening Night, “Ailey Jazz” Program

  • The Winter in Lisbon, restaged for the centennial of Dizzy Gillespie’s birth, Billy Wilson’s (1992) lively tribute to the jazz musician.
  • r-Evolution, Dream., Hope Boykin’s large ensemble work inspired by the sermons and speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Ella, Robert Battle’s tour-de-force duet celebrating the centennial of Ella Fitzgerald’s birth, set to her virtuosic scatting.
  • Revelations, Alvin Ailey’s signature must-see American masterpiece.
