Fox’s Empire show has become one of the most entertaining shows in television with powerhouse ratings and a stellar cast to say the least. A new addition we got to see last season was Latina singing sensation “Laura Calleros” played by actress/artist Jamila Velazquez. Her character has become a breakout star from the girl group she auditioned with for the infamously handsome rap prince Hakeem Lyons. She became not only his artist, but also his love interest in the midst of the Lyons Dynasty unraveling at the seams. Jamila Velazquez is known for her stand out roles on series like Law & Order: SVU, Twisted, Empire, and soon Orange is the New Black. It’s been pure entertainment bliss watching the Empire series and Velazquez’s character has kept us wanting more. Now with Empire returning this Wednesday, we can’t wait to see what happens next!

How did your acting career begin?

I got signed with my agency when I was 15, but it took two years to actually book a decent role. My first role was actually playing a prostitute on Law & Order: SVU, so they brought me back three times to play the character. One of the fun roles I had was playing a “mean girl” on the ABC Family Series Twisted.

What can we expect this season from “Laura” on Empire?

You can definitely expect a lot of growth form Laura this season and her position with Hakeem is going to become stronger.

When did you decide you wanted to become a music artist?

I mean, I kind of always knew it was something I wanted to do. Anytime anyone asked me what I wanted to do when I grow up, I would always say I want to be a singer and actress. I didn’t start to take it seriously until I was 10, that’s when I started to perform and participate in talents shows to get myself out there [and create] a YouTube Channel.

What genre would you consider your music?

I have such an eclectic taste in music. I listen to everything from the blues to alternative rock to hip-hop. So my music will definitely be different from the music you hear on Empire, but it will have an alternative but soulful sound to it.

Who have been some of your influences in acting and music?

I can say one of my first influences was actress Hillary Swank and when I saw her in Million Dollar Baby I was just blown away. As for music, it was Mariah Carey, Janis Joplin, Cher, Fiona Apple, and there are so many that inspire me.

At SHEEN we are all about things of beauty, what are your must-haves in hair care?

My hair care must-haves are Shea Moisture and I use Deva Curl. They are my must-have curling products.

Do you have any upcoming projects coming soon?

I have some new roles lined up, but I can’t speak about [it] at the moment. I can say that I will be on Orange is the New Black in June. During the hiatus, I will be working on my music.

Empire returns Wednesday, March 30th 9/8c.
