When it comes to food, Chicago native Chef Meleka McGee knows a thing or two about the difference between a meal and an experience. Sheen had a chance to speak with the culinary guru on her life experiences and how her hit seasoning saved her life.

What inspired you to become a chef?

I always felt at home in the kitchen, even as a little kid. My house was always loud because there were a lot of us. When I cooked and everyone started eating, it was the only time where it was silent. I loved what I did, so I took it a step further and went to culinary school.

Food is not only physical but also emotional. What does food mean to you?

You know, food is definitely emotional for me. It’s my therapy; it keeps me sane even when everything around me was crazy. It was and still is my therapy.
