We stan Kehlani! And her new album Blue Water Road arrived just in the nick of time. Hailing from the Bay Area, the singer-songwriter has since exploded into the forefront of the music industry, boasting one of the most dedicated fanbases who have been waiting for this new project since 2020’s It Was Good Until It Wasn’t.

Clocking in at 13 tracks, Blue Water Road boasts standout features from Thundercat, Syd, Justin Bieber, Jessie Reyez, Ambre, and Blxst. With lead singles “altar,” “little story,” and of course everyone’s favorite “up at night” featuring Justin Bieber (serving as their second collaboration), Blue Water Road delivers per usual, with Kehlani confessing her deepest darkest secrets.

As always, Kehlani’s music touches on real life experiences, straddling the topics of love, relationships, life, motherhood, and everything in between. With the constant vulnerability displayed in her lyrics, this project sees Kehlani in her most confident state, while reminding audiences that healing isn’t always a one way street.

The song “Get Me Started” featuring Syd explores Kehlani’s current outlook on relationships, or maybe she’s just ready for something new. Another standout collab is “more than i should” featuring Jessie Reyez, with both artists showcasing their velvety vocals over a Pop Wansel beat — a producer she shared her affinity for on her Instagram.

“melt” also speaks volumes, as Kehlani reminds listeners that we are all capable of love, and that it exists in the most expected places. “Shooter interlude” also displayed her exceptional songwriting skills, painting scenarios that we’ve all endured and overcome.

While this may not be the traditional R&B album, Lani is seen showcasing her more artistic side. The project was released alongside her Blue Water Trip docuseries, with a dedicated theme to each episode.
