The world is changing and you know what else is too? The Oscars. That’s right.

We know the Oscars won’t take place until February of next year but The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just made a major change and we couldn’t be more excited.

The Oscars will add a new category to their list of nominations next year!

Today, the Academy announced that they are adding the category, “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film.

That is huge for the Oscars because it marks as the first new category since 2001 when Animated Feature was added. Academy President John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson announced the new change in a letter and in addition, the Oscars will be shortened to three hours. The letter states,

“We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world.”

The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you.”

You know what that means your favorite films such as Black Panther and Avengers could be up for a nomination!

Who do you think should be nominated in the NEW Oscar category? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
