Family is everything and the Sims family could not be a more perfect example of that saying. No family is perfect. They argue, they fight but at the end of the day, the love of family will always be there. The Sims or Simply Sims as many know them on YouTube is a family that exemplifies the true meaning that family is not an important thing, it’s everything. We spoke with Sherica, the matriarch of the Sims family who shares with us what it’s like stay consistent on YouTube while raising her kids on top of everything she’s got on her plate. Join us as we got to know the Sims family and what it’s like to share their lives on the popular platform of YouTube.

Can you tell our readers about yourself? What inspired you to create your family’s YouTube channel?
Well, my name is Sherica Sims and we kind of fell into YouTube (laughs) I was an avid watcher of natural hair videos because I was starting my journey as a stay at home mom. I went from being a social worker to a stay at home mom and so I was like “I don’t know how to do natural hair!” (laughs) My husband was at work and wanted to see more of the kids and the videos were just too large to send through e-mail or text so I sent them through YouTube. I posted them for a while and one of the videos just went viral! That kind of launched us into where we are now. I didn’t realize that we were creators because I just wanted content but now we create content!

How are you able to raise your kids, live your everyday life, and find time to post a video every week? Is it difficult juggling all of it?
Difficult is an understatement (laughs). It is difficult and I don’t think a lot of people understand how much work really goes into a YouTube channel. It has to be engaging and entertaining and to be honest, that’s not every day. We talked about doing a daily vlog and it was just overwhelming for me, I couldn’t do that (laughs). I love YouTube but I also love my family and the normalcy that we do have. You have to have some privacy as well so we decided to do a weekly vlog so we can have those private moments.

In your opinion, what is the key aspect of the strong relationship that you have with your husband?
Well, respecting him! (laughs) When it comes to creating content, he’s not necessarily comfortable with. He’s kind of the behind the scenes guy so I respect him and his boundaries. When he communicated that he’s not comfortable with it, I wanted to change the approach. I took a month off just to figure out how I wanted to approach creating content so that I could respect him. That’s the number one thing I can tell your readers and anyone that is interested. We’re a family and my goal as a mother and wife is to protect them, first and foremost. So that’s what I did, I said: “Okay husband, I got you boo!” We’re doing well as a family because for him as a father, all that matters is that his wife and his kids are happy. That’s our approach going forward! Our marriage is going to stay 100% even if he has to take a back seat on this YouTube journey.

Can you offer your best advice to mothers who may aspire to share their family’s journey on YouTube but is hesitant to do so?
I would say, figure out why you’re hesitant. If you’re living your life on the Internet, you have to be aware of who you are and what you stand for because it’s easy to morph into something else someone wants you to be. If you have hesitations or any type of fears, you have to deal with those and find out what they are. When the light shines on you, it will show everything. All your imperfections, everything! Be sure you secure yourself because if you’re a mom and behind the whole content as an editor, videographer, director, and producer, you have to make sure that you’re good because it’s a lot of work especially on top of being a wife and mother. When I felt overwhelmed, I had to take a break and do what was best for me because I wanted to be a good wife and mother first and foremost for those who are most important to me.

Sheen Magazine is the Ultimate Beauty Guide for the Modern Day Woman; can you tell us about your must-have product?

In our family, my son, daughter, and I are all natural and you know, my husband has that beard (laughs). I would say, our number one product is the Shea Moisture Strengthen & Restore Leave-In Conditioner, that’s our go-to product. Everyone uses it. That’s our holy grail! That and avocado oil. If I don’t have those two, no one is getting their hair done (laughs).
