Charmeka Augustine-Young is out here making sure you remember her name. The celebrity hairstylist created her own business, Fused Hair & Extensions and it has become the ultimate hair powerhouse. Charmeka has serviced celebrities such as Cynthia Bailey and Erica Mena. What sets out this beautician from the rest is that she has made it her personal mission to cater to women of all cultures and hair types so that no one is left out. Sheen had the opportunity to sit down with Charmeka to get the scoop on her career a she makes her way to the top with no plans on stopping anytime soon.

Can you tell our readers about yourself? What intrigued you to start a career in the beauty world?
My name is Charmeka Augustine-Young. I’ve actually been in the hair world for almost ten years now. I’ve branched off and got my own salon for about five years now. It is just the basis of servicing other people, transforming their looks and styles, and really just being able to start with an empty canvas and turn it into something beautiful.

You also specialize in serving clients that suffer from thinning or balding. Why have you made it one of your missions to help clients that suffer from this?
I definitely can understand that. I started getting into that part of the hair world because my mother suffers from it. A lot of people are often scared of it or don’t know what to do when it comes to clientele with that. But, there is always something that can be done, especially now. That’s when I started getting more into custom wigs, frontals, closures, and things like that just to give them the confidence and coverage they need. A lot of times it may be something they can’t control, I want to be able to step in and help them with that.

Can you tell us about Fused Hair & Extensions?
I wanted a name that is global. I wanted something where anyone and everyone could come in. It was created so that people could “fuse” every type of hair together. That’s why I don’t just service African American clientele, I have clienteles from many cultures that have different hair types. I wanted a name that depicted that and just melted together. The hair world is constantly changing. There is always something unique and different. I wanted a name that embodied that.

Your clientele is massive and impressive with clients such as Cynthia Bailey, Erica Mena and many more! How are you able to service such celebrities and remain so humble?
It’s honestly all about staying grounded. I come from a middle-class home. It’s all about remembering where you came from. I started in my mother’s kitchen (laughs) and now I have been able to branch out and have my own salon. I’ve always wanted to stay grounded where I could embody any different type of person. I treat my clients how I want to be treated. I try to stay as humble and unique as possible.

Do you have a dream celebrity client?

Just one?! (laughs) Oh wow, I know usually all stylists say Beyoncé but honestly, I would say Michelle Obama or Oprah.

What advice do you have for those who are interested in starting a career in this field?

Stay driven. It takes a lot of sleepless nights, hard work, being in the salon for 12, 14, 16 hour days. Taking the extra step for that client will get you very far. I’ve had a lot of days and nights like that. My family, friends, and clients know me as the stylist who goes over and beyond for a client. I give my all on each and every client as if it’s my last. Always stay true to yourself and never ever let someone tell you that you can’t do it. I’ve even had family members tell me that this isn’t the “ideal money maker” but at the end of the day, I knew this was for me.

Can you tell us about the relaunching of your hair brand?

It’s something I’ve been wanting to do. I’ve been working on it for about two years now. It’s kind of tough because it was a big “NO” at first because so many people were doing it at the time. It took while to get off the ground but now, it’s thriving. A lot of my clientele love the fact that they can get their hair directly from me instead of having to find it and order it from another company. I just want hair to come in different colors and textures, no matter who you are. My brand touches on all types of hair; natural, curly, straight, all aspects. It touches on every type of hair texture you could possibly think of.

What is next for Charmeka Augustine? What can we expect from you in the future?
I always set a goal, every year to upstage myself. The next step would be travelling. I want to do more editorial work and work with heavy hitters behind the screen, whether it’s movies or commercials. Travelling is my biggest goal right now. I guess you could say the next, Kim Kimble
