This was a night for #blackgirlmagic and #blackboyjoy

Our queen Viola Davis won her first Oscar for “Best Supporting Actress” for her portrayal in the stage play turned film Fences. The oscar win puts her in great company as she is only the second black woman (Whoopi Goldberg is the first) to win a Oscar, Emmy and Tony. She gave a touching speech saying, “People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola? And I say, exhume those bodies, exhume those stories, the stories of the people who dreamed.”

She continued, “I became an artist, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life. So here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.”

New father Mahershala Ali has had a great year! After welcoming a child only a few days ago, Mahershala went home with an Oscar for “Best Supporting Actor” in the critically acclaimed movie Moonlight. Mahershala is also the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.

Moonlight also won for best adapted screenplay.
