The contenders for the 94th Academy Awards were announced earlier this week, and congratulations are in order for the King Richard cast and crew. Will Smith’s biopic King Richard, about tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams’ father Richard Williams, has been nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. In addition, Will Smith has also been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

Will Smith is making his return to the Oscars ballot after 15 years. His last nomination was for The Pursuit of Happyness in 2007 and he is happy to be back. “This one is really different. It’s one thing to be singularly nominated. And it’s another thing when it’s the entire group, the film. It’s just a different thing. This could have been a much smaller story. But the audience recognizing the universal gifts and power of the ideas in this film, it is beautifully uplifting and inspiring for me,” Smith told the New York Times.

The nominations fall under the Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Original Song categories.
