Kandia Johnson – Communications Strategist and Founder, Kandid Conversations

How long have you been in business?

I’ve been in the communications industry for 15 years as an employee, and four years as an entrepreneur.

Why did you pick this particular field to do business in?

I’ve always enjoyed helping people turn their vision into reality. Very early on, I was that friend who people would always come to for help with clearly communicating their ideas and putting together a plan to help them reach their audience or launch a business or organization.

Do you mind sharing a challenge you have faced in the business and how you have overcame it?

Getting out of my own way and nailing down daily habits as well a process to attract clients and grow a profitable business was my biggest challenge. Here’s how I’ve overcome it:

  • Adopted an experimental mindset – I had to overcome the fear of rejection, looking silly, and failing. The only way to build confidence is through action. Once you understand that nothing is ever final and everything you put out into the world is an experiment for you to learn and grow—you can tackle this mindset. All success starts with a growth mindset and a belief in yourself. Think about it this way, even major brands like Airbnb and Facebook have tested their concepts in small markets before becoming what they are today. Earlier this year, one of the best pieces of advice I heard was—Launch it broke, fix it live and think progress not perfection.
  • Stopped Winging it – I had to learn how to plan three to six months ahead in business. You need to consider everything from creating an automated email sequence for customers when they inquire about a service to creating marketable content to reach your audience. Thankfully, there are a gazillion tools and resources you can use like an editorial calendar for planning content, Mailchimp, Infusionsoft and Buffer for email and social media marketing, Wave or Stripe for invoicing and Calendly or Acuity for scheduling appointments.
  • Built a rock star network – Success can be found in your daily routine but you can’t do it alone. I have built amazing relationships with women and men who tell me things I don’t want to hear but I need these gems to advance in my career. At times, I’ve also hired a coach, an assistant as well as temporary contractors to help me get things done.

Why do you feel you have been as successful as you have in your business?

Through my articles, workshops, and consulting projects, I’ve created opportunities for 9-5ers and entrepreneurs across the US and Africa to become recognized leaders in their fields and influential voices within their industry. My clients have been featured on TV and radio shows, landed speaking engagements at major conference such as South by Southwest, and has been published in magazines and online news publications.

Why are you so compelled on seeing other women win BIG?

Too many women aren’t reaching their full potential because they lack self-confidence or they’re playing it safe and living by someone else’s definition of success. They’re seeking validation from external sources yet; everything they need to succeed is within. I’m also frustrated with studies that report on the gender pay gap and the lack of support for women of color at work. When a woman lacks self-confidence it stops her from getting the spotlight she deserves for her work, getting paid what she’s worth, and creating generational wealth for her family.

So, what’s next in 2018 for you?

In January 2018, I’m launching the She Deserves More project a mentor matching and master class series, to help mid-career women position themselves for

  • More visibility.
  • More wealth.
  • More connections to women champions, and partners around the world.

With a focus on confidence building and connections, She Deserves More is the partial solution to narrowing the gender pay gap and connecting women with career advancement opportunities around the world.

Do you mind sharing a fun fact about yourself?

I’m obsessed with African safaris. I’ve done three so far. My dream is to do a walking safari in Madagascar and Maasai Mara, Kenya.
