Ruby Dee was a critically acclaimed actress, playwright, screenwriter and civil rights activist. She began her acting career on Broadway starring in multiple plays, but her most memorable role was in A Raisin in the Sun. She went on to star in the film version of the classic play and continued to work in film starring in Do the Right Thing, The Jackie Robinson Story and American Gangster. Dee, along with her husband Ossie Davis, were also activists and worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Dee died in 2014 at her New Rochelle, New York home at the age of 91.
