We were first introduced to Young Lyric when she appeared on Lifetime TV’s hit reality show, The Rap Game and since then we haven’t stopped obsessing over her! The Houston native recorded her first single at just 6-years-old and she hasn’t been able to slow down ever since. We caught up with the young music sensation to talk all things music!

Between your dad and uncle, music has been apart of your life for quite some time – how did you decide which avenue you wanted to take in music?

I always knew that music was what I wanted to do. I’m my father’s first daughter, so he literally brought me everywhere with him and always played his music in the car while I was in the cut.  My uncle had a studio in his house. I would go over there every day after school, and he would be in there working. I would beg him every day to please let me record a song, and one day he finally let me. Ever since then, I kept making music. That was like in 2006 when I was only 6 years old. The rest is history!

Tell us how your experience on The Rap Game helped you within your career?

Being on the rap game helped me gain a lot of exposure and gave me a real rap experience. Most importantly, it taught me a lesson that stuck with me for life. That lesson is “Always be prepared.”

Being a cast member on the show, it seemed all over the place and we never knew what we were doing that specific day or what we were going to be walking into. The first day on set, we had to perform for T.I., Jermaine Dupri, and Da Brat, so I definitely realized that I had to be ready for whatever at any given moment. That’s the most important thing that I took away and I’m thankful for that experience.

How would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as being ‘Sweet, but Street.’ I’m a really nice girl but I have a lil hood in me, and I think that’s okay! I’m like a real “pretty girl” that throws up gang signs and sh**. My music definitely speaks for me and represents everything that I am, wholeheartedly.

What lyrics best describe your life, currently?

Lyrics that describe my life right now are actually from one of my favorite artists NBA Youngboy’s “Untouchable”

“I remember I wanted to quit so many times, but I knew this moment would come, now it’s my time

I gotta make up for all them nights that my mama cried

I’m goin in I’m puttin everything on the line”

The words describe my life right now because I used to have thoughts of giving up sometimes, when it seemed like things weren’t working fast enough. My mama and daddy work real hard and make a lot of sacrifices for me to make the dream work, so I realized I have to keep pushing and put my all on the line so that I can get to where I need to be to take care of myself and my family.

What beauty essential do you use daily?

A beauty essential I use daily would be face wash and face moisturizer. Gotta be cute in and outta makeup.

What advice would you give other young people aspiring to be in the industry?

The advice that I would give to young people aspiring to be in the industry would be to never give up. You can do anything you put your mind to. No matter how long it takes, stay focused, consistent and prayed up. Never be scared of hard work and never let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do! Always chase your dreams!

What can we expect next from Young Lyric?

Next from me, you can expect a project. I’m about to drop an album and I’m still deciding on the title, but it’s expected to drop around late October or November. That’s my main focus right now. I’m looking forward to dropping it & I think my fans are gonna love it. The whole tape lit and it has a few features that they’re gonna love as well. Stay tuned!
