The starting point to care for your natural hair is determining your hair’s porosity, which allows you to choose the best products to use for maximum hair health. But—what’s hair porosity, and how do you figure out your own?
Hair porosity refers to your hair’s ability to absorb moisture, and the cuticle of the hair shaft is responsible for this. Measured from low, normal, to high, you can test your hair’s porosity by dipping a few strands into a bowl of water and observing the absorption. High porous hair will sink to the bottom.
High Porosity Hair absorbs water and oil easily. Unlike low or medium porosity locks, high porosity does better without heat and chemical treatments.
Why does High Porous Hair Tangle?
While high porous hair absorbs water and oil –it doesn’t retain that moisture for long. This is due to the fact that the hair’s cuticles, which lay flat when healthy, have been lifted and are no longer in an ideal condition. Because the cuticles are aggressively raised, the strands tangle onto each other. In addition to easily tangling –high porous hair is also more susceptible to extreme dryness and lack of shine.
If you’re experiencing any of these hair challenges with your high porous strands, Sheen caught up with hair and skincare company Soultanicals to provide 3 easy detangling tips to prevent unnecessary pain and damage.
Founded by Ayo Ogun-McCants – Soultanicals is an earthy, self-love collection of hand-crafted, soul-infused, melanin-inspired, body/hair love products made with a unique blend of organic, plant-based, herbal, and African botanical ingredients.
Deep condition to restore your hair’s cuticle

Seal in moisture when you pre-poo before washing Hair
High porous hair requires effort and consistency. One way to ensure your hair’s cuticles are healthy is by pre-pooing with oil before washing. This helps lock in moisture without releasing it back to the air. Soultanicals Bloom – Supa Potent Healthy Hair Growth Oil is infused with extra virgin olive oil that is both heavy and great for sealing. Since olive oil is one of the few oils that penetrate the hair shaft, this would be a great option to use as a sealant.
Use products formulated to detangle hair
