Can you share your journey of breast cancer diagnosis?
I was diagnosed twice, the first time was in 2004 and it was one of those initial mammograms. They saw a spot that was concerning, then recommended a biopsy, and I clearly remember being in the OR because I’m a doctor, and I went down between patients and she needed to give me some sleeping medicine and I thought to myself, ‘I can’t because I need to go back to surgery.’ Later in the day, I went and had the biopsy, and on a Monday I found out that I had breast cancer. I was in total disbelief. I went through six months of chemo and 33 cycles of radiation. Later,, I also learned I was infertile from the chemotherapy which had caused my ovaries to go into menopause. Four years later, I learned I had been diagnosed with breast cancer again but in the opposite breast. I had a double mastectomy and fortunately didn’t have to have chemo that time.
