Kimberly shares with SHEEN her tips for transitioning, working in the beauty influencer industry, and having healthier hair
What made you decide to share you hair care journey on Youtube?
I started my YouTube in college and it was me just wanting to talk about new products, hairstyles, or new things that I was trying. From there, I kind of just gravitated towards more hair videos, I was doing a lot of makeup as well, but I was really kind of known for my long hair and I realized that I was going through a journey. I went from being permed, then having straight hair due to heat damage and into natural. It was a learning process as I was learning from others I was realizing that others that was watching me was learning from me.
What advice would you give to people who would like to transition?
The advice I would give anyone is to make it your own.
Ask yourself: Do you want long hair or do you just want healthy hair? What can you handle? What type of hairstyles you know how to do? If you don’t know how to do many hairstyles, then you might not want to do the transitioning stage. You’re going to comb through your hair everyday, which may cause your hair to break off.
So it’s definitely gonna be a different experience based on the person. It just best to choose what works best for you.
What are some of your favorite hairstyles?
I would have to say wash and gos and a braid out are my top two.
What are your tips for providing, achieving healthy hair?
Definitely deep conditioning weekly and don’t cut your hair as much. Do hair styles that are going to last you the max amount of days. A lot of people just do hairstyles just for it to look cute, but you have to figure out which hairstyle is going to get the most days. When you’re not touching and manipulating your hair that’s how it’s going to be a lot healthier and a lot longer and you’re going to maintain that length. I try to tell people it is just like dreads, dreads get super long just because they’re not touching it, they are not combing it, and they’re not doing anything. If you can prolong your hairstyles, it’s just a lot better on your hair.
What advice do you have for people who like want to start their own channel or want to get into the beauty influencer space?
I would say, honestly just have a goal and stick to it. There’s nothing worse than someone following you because they think you’re moving in one direction and they’re following you to see the progression, then you end that and you then you switch it up.
How has your life changed by being an influencer?
Yeah, we’ve been really good. When I first started my YouTube channel, my family and friends didn’t know, I didn’t post it on my normal social media. It was more like on a hush-hush and people thought it was really crazy. Now it’s so crazy that all of my friends love it, they reach out to me for questions on hair, they trust that I know what I’m talking about, and they actually watch my videos. Also, it’s nice to be able to help people because the natural hair community is something that’s evolving, of course. It’s just kind of nice to be able to give my insight and people are actually trusting what I say. I’ve grown a lot. The brands that reach out to me, I never would have thought would be interested.
It’s certainly opening up doors that I never thought! It’s amazing, honestly because you don’t know where it can go with companies getting involved. It brings communities together and I do like that aspect of it.
