Ade Samuel: The Intern Turned Stylist:

Ade Samuel is the epitome of hard work and dedication. Samuel excelled at the opportunity of being an assistant stylist at TEEN Vogue where she assisted styling with celebrities like Elle Varner and Nicole Richie. Samuel knew she wanted to be a stylist based on her love for clothing and eye for patterns, fabrics and textures. Samuel built her clientele via word of mouth along with the help of social media.

Coming from Nigerian descent, we have traditional weddings and events where we have to wear traditional clothing. I loved watching my mother and grandmother, who is also a tailor, put me in Aso Ebi (lace or Nigerian garb) which is used to create a silhouette that works for your body. Which essentially is what drew me into my love for fashion and my admiration for styling.”

Ade Samuel: The Designer

Ade Samuel launched her first shoe collection in June 2016. Samuel shared with me the how and the why she decided to start a shoe line for women.

“It’s been an amazing journey. Definitely difficult because it is self funded; no investor, just me. I utilized my ability and knowledge of styling to see and cultivate press.”

What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered as a designer?

The consumer. Most people would want to buy a Christian Louboutin rather than invest in a small business just because it’s easier to work with something you’re familiar with. I feel the biggest challenge as a designer is getting people to respect and recognize your brand as a quality just as they do all those big designers.

What can we look forward to from Ade Samuel?

So many things! I’m trying to inspire women. Continue to grow my brand and be a household name for women and young girls who aspire to be in the fashion industry. Being a woman of color and of Nigerian descent, my parents were immigrants and knew nothing about fashion. I want to encourage people to follow their dreams, believe in yourself and allow your dreams to flourish. Family and everyone else will come on board once they see what you’re doing is substantial.
