Just yesterday, Aretha Franklin became a Pulitzer Prize winner!

The official press release stated that Franklin was honored with this award “for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades.”

The Queen of Soul receiving this honor marks her the first woman to receive this award! The first award was given out in 1930. Past winners of this prestigious award include Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, and Kendrick Lamar!

Franklin also became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and had a total of 73 songs on Billboard’s Top 100.

In August 2018, Aretha Franklin passed away from pancreatic cancer.
