International best-selling author, investor, speaker, and CEO of the largest African American Residential Real Estate and Lending firm in North California is clearly a woman of many hats. Carter is not only a woman dedicated to helping others but as an author, she is a woman of wise words. Just recently, Carter released her fourth book titled, The Secret to Breaking the BROKE Code and of course, we had to get all the details. In this exclusive interview with the boss lady herself, Carter opens up to us about her exciting new book and why she just wants to help people!

Tell us about yourself.

Ooh! How much do you want to know? (Laughs)I am the CEO of Catalyst Real Estate Professionals, we are the largest African American Residential Real Estate & Lending firm in Northern California. We are based in Northern California but we have agents all over. I’ve been in the real estate business since 2002. I am from San Jose, California. I was homeless at 18-years-old but I bought my first house at 23. My background is in the IT field, I was an IT analyst. Unfortunately, I was laid off but it couldn’t have come at a better time because I simply fell in love with real estate and I was in the process of getting my license. I hit the ground running doing real estate.

I was 26-years-old when I started. My first year, I made about $70,000 and never made under six figures. I got my broker’s license in 2006, and in 2010, I opened up Catalyst Real Estate Professionals with ten women agents. It was a very diverse group! It started with just the ten of us and we ended up being the top companies in the area! Here we are today, the largest African American Residential Real Estate and lending firm in Northern California!

While most companies are transactional, I always had a different perspective. I wanted to help people create wealth and change the dynamic of your family and life. It was important for me is to create an environment and culture that allowed opportunities for our agent to create wealth.

In 2009, I filed for bankruptcy. I went from having an 800 credit score down to a 379. I used the situation as a way to help others financially in writing a best-selling book about credit.

Tell us about your new book, The Secret to Breaking the Broke Code.

I’ve learned that using the things that I’ve gone through has been really instrumental in my success. A lot of the things that I have gone through with being homeless is why I am so passionate about creating wealth through real estate. Filing bankruptcy was a catalyst to get me to help others. Mindset has been a really important issue that has kept a lot of people from achieving wealth. I’ve been there. I know what it’s like! The Secret to Breaking the BROKE Code is really principles around getting people to break those strongholds and the lies we’ve told ourselves about what we can have or what we deserve. It was created to help people change their narratives and their mindset. It was important for me to write something that would help people turn off the negative thinking and turn on powerful thinking. This book is really a manifestation of the core principles that have helped me get this far.

Why are you so dedicated to helping others whether it is in business or life in general?

Every job that I’ve had, I’ve always tried to find a way I could be of service to someone. In my mind, I was able to find joy in something when it came to me helping someone else. Even in jobs that I didn’t really like, I still wanted to find ways to help others in one way or another. That is how I’ve always lived my life, in service of others. It’s the reason why I think I have been so successful. I believe when you serve others, the blessings come to you. When I sent out the first e-mail when I got my real estate license, I just wanted to help people in any way that I can. If there is anything I can do to make someone’s life a little better, that’s what I want to do. I’m so blessed that real estate is the best way for me to do that because number one, it’s the best way for people to build wealth and number two, it really changes people’s lives. When you give people something that they can own or use it to add leverage to create something great, it’s such a rewarding experience.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?

Ah! Expect to see more! Expect to see me expanding the business and helping more people. You will see Catalyst expanding beyond California and you will see a movement of like-minded people who will take this country by storm. Simply, expect to see big things from Catalyst and Constance Carter.
