Mr. 88 is an up-and-coming Hip Hop artist whose catchy hooks, vibrant beats and deep lyrics place him at the forefront of the next wave of Hip Hop Artists. He’s been featured on BET’s One Shot, opened up for an artist like Snoop Dogg, TI, Jeezy and appeared on local stations in the city of Mobile, Alabama. He also won a Nappie Award for best Hip Hop artist 2016 & 2017 in Mobile, Alabama. Since his appearance on BET’s One Shot, where he made it into the top six, he spoke recently with me on how that experience made him humble and better as an artist. His musical performances are full of energy and deliver messages that make you laugh, think a bit deeper and at the same time vibe out to the hypnotic wave of the beat. In a recent interview with me on Starrdom100 Radio, he shared some insights about his journey as an artist since his performance on BET.
What was the experience like performing on BET’s One Shot?
BET was lit, that actually was crazy. I had already put out three albums and I was at the verge of quitting because the third album had not gotten as much response. My brother sent me a link for the show, so I went out there to the live audition and competed. I just showed them my personality and they loved it.
How did that experience change you as an artist?
It taught me how to carry myself better because I thought I had already done a good job with carrying myself but that experience fine-tuned it. Here you’re like a big fish in a little pond when you are out here putting in work and people are acknowledging you, but I wasn’t really progressing. Out there it’s a competition and there are thousands of other artists that you have to perform against. I went through like six rounds and made it to the top six out of three thousand artists. This journey for me since that experience has been a rollercoaster because I thought I had made it, but it humbled me. You got to love this because I thought it was over for me, but that’s where the love for the art comes in and saves you.
What advice would you give for upcoming Independent Artists trying to be heard?
Make sure you love this and that you’re not doing it because of all of your homeboys’ freestyle. Do it because you genuinely love it. You got to want to do this even if you’re by yourself. So in that time where you are creating, don’t be afraid to fail, don’t be afraid to experiment, try some things out and if it doesn’t work then go back to the drawing board. Also don’t be self-absorbed, there are so many resources out there so reach out because none of the success stories you read are from people who did it by themselves.
What new music projects do you have out now?
My latest album is called DEAD People, it’s an acronym meaning Don’t Ever Accept Defeat. The album is available now on Apple Music, Spotify, and Google Play.
