Hip-hop artist, Big IL has just recently released a project entitled, “Fearless.” His music expresses his reality living in Chicago and how he wants to inspire others though his art. His impact in his community and on the youth mentors speaks volumes about his efforts in public service. Big IL recognizes the gritty streets of Chicago are tough but his music speaks from his heart to inspire those that are facing day to day trials. I had an opportunity to speak with him about his goals for 2018.
How long have you been rapping?
I’m from Chicago, Illinois and I’ve been rapping for about 10-12 years. I’m just a well-rounded guy whose trying to take care of his family and work by doing what I love.
What has been one of your favorite songs or content you’ve released so far?
One of my favorite songs is an unreleased record called, “Dis for My Mama.” It was real emotion when I laid the track. She was not sick or anything but it was something that really touched me. It holds a special place in my heart.
What can we expect in 2018 from your new music release?
In 2018, my music is fearless and it’s a great sound. It’s motivational, great for your ears, and it’s here for the people. It’s music to help people who have fallen down to be picked up again and for the kids in the street to show guidance. It’s a voice for the masses and for my city. I do music that people like and I’m a mentor. I want to continue working with kids, and I have a passion for our youth.
How has the Chicago music scene influenced your music?
Just being relevant here and I feel like I’m timeless here in my city. If you mind your business here you can be safe and Chicago’s rap scene is so talented. I would like to say a lot of cities follow our trend and that’s no disrespect to anyone but it’s all love.
How did the concept of being “fearless” start in your music?
Just being yourself. People are so worried about what people think. Just love who you are through prayer, faith, and love that’s why I came up with fearless. I want everybody to be that way. The project is now available on all music streams.
What is the writing process like for you?
I’m inspired by a lot of things. If I’m in the studio, I can write a song or just when I’m chilling at home. I get inspired even when I’m driving, I’m writing songs in my head. I have the luxury to be able to do it every type of way. Whatever the moment is for me I just trust the process whether it’s with a pen and a pad or my phone.
What are your thoughts on social media?
Social media is cool. I try to stay focused on what I think is dope and I want people to enjoy what I create. I get a great response on social media and the world has come to that so you can’t ignore that.
