She provided services to many powerhouses such as Tinashe, Debbie Allen, Misty Copeland and many more! In this exclusive interview with Carter, we discussed her hairline, Pyara Hair, her businesses, and her experience at Black Girls Rock!
Tell us about yourself.
I am Nafisah Carter and I’m an international celebrity hairstylist. I have business in Raleigh, North Carolina, a studio salon, and I also have a hairline.
Can you tell us more about your hair line?
I have different kinds of hair: Indian hair, Brazilian hair, and Peruvian hair and I also have different textures: straight, wavy, deep wave, curly, kinky curly, a lot of different textures. The hair lasts up to three years with proper care. It’s amazing, there is no tangling, no shedding, it colors well, I just love it. It is all high-quality hair!
What inspired you to become a celebrity hair stylist?
In the beginning, I just wanted to be a hairstylist because I thought it was fun and cool. I had a cousin that owned a salon and I would work with her; I would shampoo hair and answer the phone. In college, I would do all of my friends’ hair and that’s when I realized I wanted to actually do hair professionally. While working in the hair salon, I thought to myself, “I don’t think this is enough for me.” I watched television and read magazines and that’s when I realized that I was more interested in styling celebrities’ hair. I was really impressed by celebrity hairstylists that worked on celebrities I liked and I just wanted to create the different type of looks they created.
Can you tell us about the challenges you may have overcome in order to get to where you are today?
I’ve had a lot of challenges (laughs). It is hard getting to the point where you are working with celebrities and different shows. You have a lot of setback. I had a major setback. I moved to New York to work with celebrities, get my foot in the door, and learn more. I had things that came up with my living situation because I am a single parent. I had to drop everything and move back to North Carolina. That was very hard for me because I only saw myself in New York and I did not see myself going back (laughs). I had to learn to pick myself up and keep going. I felt like everything was falling apart but it actually led me into a better direction.
Do you mind sharing your experience styling celebrities? Do you have a favorite client thus far?
I don’t know if I have a favorite (laughs). I love them all. They were all really nice. I was shocked and amazed when I styled Debbie Allen’s hair. She was really sweet and talked to me the entire time. I helped her get ready for Black Girls Rock! All of the celebrities that I have worked with have been really nice to me so I don’t know if I have a favorite but she does stand out to me because I was already just in awe even doing her hair and for her to be so nice and welcoming just added on!
Tell us all about your experience at Black Girls Rock!
It was amazing. I’ve been working with Black Girls Rock! For at least five years now and I love it every year! It’s so nice to have a lot of women come together and support one another. I love it!
What advice do you have for our readers?
Always be you. Never give up on your dream and work hard to get the things you want. Stay focused and stay around positive people.
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Well, I’ll be traveling overseas more and teaching classes, working in different salons, I have a project coming out soon in Australia and I’m headed to Dubai to work and teach other hairstylists.
