With just a click of a button? Well, not quite. Charlton Reed or Charming Charlton (as most know him) is a Houston-based photographer who has quickly made an impression in the world of entertainment. As a photographer, he is brilliant but when we had the chance to get to know him, we found a humble man past the lens. Reed credits his brand manager, dime diva branding for always working with him, his parents for blessing him with his creative ability, and he views anyone that supports him is a blessing as well. In this exclusive interview, Charlton opened up to us and proved just exactly why they call him Charming Charlton.
Tell us about yourself. When did your love for all thing art begin?
Well, I have been doing photography for about eight years now. I’ve been full-time with it for a little over five years. I’d have to say my love for art began at a young age. I think I naturally gravitated towards it as a child because my parents had an artistic/creative background. My dad was big on drawing and sketching so I followed in that direction as well. Throughout high school, I drew a lot myself.
What was it about photography that made you want to make it a full-time career?
Well, for me, honestly once I started photography, that’s where my strongest passion came from. It didn’t feel like work then and it still doesn’t feel like work now. It’s like my escape. In photo shoots, I can channel all my energy into doing that. It’s been fun and I love creating new things to see the outcome as well.
What would you say is a common misconception about photographers?
Probably one of the things that I hear the most and it’s the most annoying (laughs) is that you just click a button. I know it really looks like that but it’s a lot more complicated than that. For me, I’m big on not so much posing but the vibe. I like to create certain energy, kind of like a story when I’m producing work. When I work with first-time people in front of the camera, you can’t really tell because I want to create an environment where they can be confident and comfortable. I would definitely say that is one of the biggest misconceptions, its more than getting someone in front of you and taking a photo.
Who is the man behind the camera? When you’re not snapping shots of people, what are you doing or enjoy doing?
Honestly, I’m more of an entertainer; I think that’s just the Leo side of me (laughs). I like to go out, have fun with my friends whether they’re in the industry or not. Outside of having fun and traveling (which I love), I love R&B. If I can catch a show, whether it’s a live band or not, I just love music in general.
What advice would you have for aspiring photographers?
If I could tell any aspiring photographer, I would say to just keep shooting and find your niche. The best way to do that is to experiment, try different things, try different styles, it’s all about finding what you’re good at. Just keep shooting, learning, and ask questions!
What can we expect to see from Charming Charlton in the future?
I have a lot of things I’m looking forward to! I will be going on more tours and traveling to different cities while expanding my team as we take on bigger projects. You can expect to see photography classes whether it is for lighting or photo editing. I do plan on digging into my creative concept and putting out some great pieces.
