Detroit is no longer just the home of Motown and fancy autos. It is now one of the largest meccas for natural hair and African culture thanks to Charice ‘Ettaflyy’ Thomas and her sister Jennifer Thomas. Together these two creatives and naturalistas have masterminded Detroit’s biggest and most well-attended natural hair movements—WE ROCK DOPE HAIR: A Natural Hair Experience.
What started as frequent meet-ups for conversation at their 30-year-old family-owned, Sweet Potato Sensations Bakery has now spawned into a hair awakening and highly coveted festival of arts featuring, natural foods, clothing, arts, dance, and live hair demonstrations.
“We are celebrating eight years. We started in 2010 and the vision was to bring our friends together who were rocking their natural hair. We wanted to bring stylists together to talk about the day-to-day challenges of all kinds of hair care. We grew up in Fellowship Chapel, which is an African-centered church and where a lot of women were rockin’ natural hair, locs, twists, braids, beards and everything. So as we got older, we went on our own natural hair journey. We also encouraged our sisters who are rockin’ their weaves to come out and celebrate with us. There was something for everyone,” says EttaFly.
More than 1,000 local and international natural hair enthusiasts gathered in Detroit’s uniquely situated Artist Village on Saturday, June 2, 2018 to attend WE ROCK DOPE HAIR. Familiar faces, newbies to the hair revolution, and reigning Queens and Kings packed more than 1500 square feet of space to shop, attend seminars, and learn the latest tricks of the trades from industry giants like professional hair psychologist, Patrece M. Lucas, MS LLPC Counselor, Markqisha St. Clair and LaDonna Sims from Hair Goals 313, Nerissa Alexandria Giles of the Goddess Beautique.
“We are grateful to all of our sponsors including Charice ‘Ettaflyy’ Thomas, Walker-Miller Energy Services, Tru2U Naturals Mind Body Spirit, Sweet Potato Sensations, Original Moxie, Rachel Lutz from The Peacock Room and John George of Detroit Blight Busters. We’re glad this event brought people together to meet, share and and fully embrace their hair. We value community and were glad that people came to ROCK with us.”
