In elementary school, high school and even in college, students are posed this question: “If you can go back in time to visit a significant figure in history, who would it be and what would you guys do or talk about?” Jason Overstreet has completed this assignment for everyone with his historical novel, The Strivers’ Row Spy. Sidney Temple is the second African American agent in the Bureau of Investigation. Plucked fresh from college, his task is to spy on Marcus Garvey, the President of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, in Harlem, NY during the 1920’s. Unbeknownst to J. Edgar Hoover and the Bureau, Temple is a W.E.B. Du Bois supporter and uses this as an opportunity to slip the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People insider information.
As Temple becomes closer to Garvey and his allies, his whole life does a 180 and it is solely up to him to bring it back full circle. Jason Overstreet’s debut novel is written especially for the little history junkies in all readers. Reminiscent of lessons learned and articles read while growing up, this book will keep the audiences interest peaked while connecting moments in history with missing pieces no one on the outside could have imagined. The Strivers’ Row Spy will be released September 2016.
