“Dark” yet “captivating” was the ambiance upon entering this couture filled exhibit! The New York City Museum at FIT is currently showcasing a ravishing collection of fairytale inspired pieces entitled Fairy Tale Fashion. “Since fairy tales are rarely set in a specific time period of place, the stories in the exhibition are illustrated using garments and accessories that date from the 18th century to the present—with particular emphasis on extraordinary 21st century fashions by designers from around the world,” says curator Colleen Hill.

Embracing the meticulous craftsmanship and executions of abstract fairytale inspirations in these couture garments was not only awe-inspiring, but magical! From walking in to the time we left, our mouths remained open in marvel of this art! Every mannequin was draped and styled to command attention and pluck your mythical imagination! The exhibit is comprised of approximately (15) different fairytale themes: “Cinderella”, “Little Red Riding Hood”, “The Fairies”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Rapunzel”, “Snow White”, “Furrypelts”, “Snow White and Rose Red”, “The Little Mermaid”, “The Snow Queen”, “The Red Shoes”, “The Swan Maidens”, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, and “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. For some, each theme established a different connection while evoking a unique level of excitement. This exhibit of couture garments is a MUST to experience! So much so that, we’re sharing our experience in this fairytale couture land with you! Here are our favorite themes from the exhibit.
