Allow me to introduce you to Megan Percell. If this is your first time you’re hearing of her, get ready because you are about to learn more about her and her brand, Five More Minutes as time passes. It seems as if women empowerment just became a thing, right? Well, actually, no. You’re wrong, its always been a thing and should be implemented always!
Megan is here to do just that and her mission to do so is both inspiring and admirable to me. I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Percell as she gave me insight into her brand and why empowering women is so important to her.
Tell our readers a little about yourself.
My name is Megan and I’m originally from Los Angeles, California but I spent some time on the East Coast. I also went to college in Portland at Lewis and Clark College. In 2015, I came back to LA and I started Five More Minutes in 2017. We have been empowering and uplifting women through health, fitness, and beauty ever since!
What inspired you to create Five More Minutes?
Well, it was important for me to create a brand that was rooted in authenticity. To be honest, I think Five More Minutes was created itself before I even realized! 2015 was a pretty big year for me because I had come back from Los Angeles after being in a long-term relationship. It wasn’t good, it just wasn’t healthy. During that time, I was really trying to find myself and started working for my family’s business. Shortly after, my aunt pushed me to apply to become a flight attendant. As confusing as this was to me, I took her suggestion. I applied and three weeks later, I was in Houston for a six-week training. While there were men there, I had never been around so many strong women that were in all walks and stages of life! It was then when I began coming out of my haze. I understood and saw what the power of surrounding yourself with women who empower other women was. I also learned the power of owning the moment that you’re in. For me, if I didn’t own that moment. If I questioned my aunt or questioned the time I was in instead of owning that time, I wouldn’t be where I was today.
While working as a flight attendant, I continued to build and empower my online community, which continued to organically grow and it became what it is today, an empowering lifestyle brand that encourages you to own your moment while reminding you that you matter!
Why is it so important for you to empower other women?
For me, the fact of the matter is, I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for the incredible tribe that I have behind me. My mother is my absolute superhero. She is the one who taught me that I can be anything that I want to be. As cliché as it sounds, its something that sticks with me. My sisters, my aunts, my cousins, they’re always standing right by my side no matter what. My two dads are constantly reminding me that I have a voice and a purpose in this world. That foundation and perspective is so invaluable but its so easy to forget and so easy to lose sight of. Its up to women to share their foundation with one another and uplift each other, because if we don’t remind one another who else will?
You have an amazing following on your social media but what is one thing most of your followers don’t know about you?
(Laughs) Well, I’m pretty open on social media. Typically, what you see is what you get with me, especially on Instastory. I would say that most of my followers don’t know that after I flew commercial for almost a year, I started on the private side as a private flight attendant. So every so often, you can find me on a jet! Its something I still like to keep up with just to spice things up! It keeps me balanced so I’m not just on the creative side.
Sheen Magazine is the Ultimate Beauty Guide for the Modern Day Woman; do you mind sharing your holy grail products?
I was recently introduced to apple cider vinegar and baking soda. It has done wonders for balancing out my pH, hyperpigmentation, and my uneven areas. I would stay that has probably saved me in the past two months. I went to Paris about six months ago and I became obsessed with their embryolisse as their moisturizer, it’s been incredible! It’s a great primer as well. If I’m on a plane, I have a little container of apple cider vinegar, baking soda, and this cream (laughs).
Where do you hope to see yourself and your brand in the years to come?
Earlier this week, Five More Minutes launched the first line of many with our luxury towel line. All of our products, especially these towels will have a word of affirmation on them. The first being, “I have a purpose.” Psychologist, Gary Winch said that we spend so much of our time taking care of our bodies and healing them that we forget about our minds. The towels are a direct reflection of what Five More Minutes stands for. Our mission is a lifestyle. I wanted to be able to reach and affirm people outside of the screen. I hope to continue to do just that. I hope in the years to come the brand will continue to grow and I see Five More Minutes continuing in the home and basic apparel as a brand.
I see Five More Minutes collaborating and co-branding with various companies like Equal. They are an all inclusive sportswear brand that is coming out that stands for a lot of what Five More Minutes is aiming to do.
