The “Golden Age of Hollywood” descended upon Hotel du Cap in Antibes to raise over $20 million to fund education programs and aid research for HIV/AIDS as the 24th annual amFAR Cinema Against AIDS charity gala kicked off the last weekend of the Cannes Film Festival in the French Riviera. The gala featured musical performance, a fashion show, and a generous auction, where one star-studded selfie sold for $560,000.
Nicki Minaj kicked off the night’s performances with “Swish Swish”, Rita Ora followed up with her latest single, “Your Song,” and American diva Diana Ross brought the crowd to their knees with hits “I’m Coming Out”, “I Will Survive”, and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The night closed out with Joe Jonas and group, DNCE closed out the night with their popular anthem, “Cake By The Ocean.”
David Beckham, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bella Hadid, Irina Shayk, and Nicole Kidman were just some of the names that showed out at the gala that has attracted celebrities, philanthropist, and entrepreneurs to the charity gala. The event has raised over $190 million in two decades and signifies the end of the glamour Cannes Film Festival which is in it’s 70th year.
Some of the items on the auction block included a chance to play soccer with British legend, David Beckham($392,000), a five-day trek to visit the Dalai Lama ($392,000), a 1958 Jaguar XK150 ($671,000). Red carpet surprises included former convict turned model, Jeremy Meeks posing on the carpet and Tracee Ellis Ross’s Jenny Packham dress which gave us all the old D. Ross feels.
