What made you want to begin your YouTube channel?
Well, I was in school for cosmetology and at that particular time, I was known for my makeup. My classmates would often ask me for tips and tricks. I would get the same questions all the time so I decided to start the YouTube channel for them so that they could reference the looks I wore the day before. It took off from there and the rest is history.
What made you decide that you wanted to have a healthier lifestyle?
Well for me, I was diagnosed with depression in 2012. When I was clinically diagnosed, I was told by my doctor that I had several options to combat the disease. One of the ways was to take medication and the other was to take a holistic approach. The first time I tried the medication route, it took me through different emotions. I would be really angry or I couldn’t eat. It made me super forgetful. It wasn’t until 2015-2016 when my weight was out of control. I was extremely depressed after a major break up so I ate my emotions. I took a trip to Miami and during that time, I said I wanted to take back my life the moment I got back home to Chicago. The moment I got back I started to hit the pavement hard. I got a nutritionist, a trainer, I was just trying to get my mental health back. I had to eat right and meditate. When you combine them, they give you a great force to combat your depression. I didn’t start off wanting to lose weight, the purpose of it was to gain control of my mental health. I fell in love with the lifestyle.
What would you say was the most challenging part of your weight-loss journey?
It definitely has to be the mental strength. It first starts with a thought but unfortunately, if you’re not mentally strong for the road ahead, you’re going to have a hard time. Its about building mental strength. Having depression, you naturally have a negative thought process. It is so crippling to wake up everyday and think negatively about your situation or yourself. Once it goes from the mind out of the mouth, you create the reality by building mental strength. Start off small, journal, or say positive affirmations to yourself.
What is it like juggling motherhood and life as an entrepreneur?
It has its ups and downs. It’s hard. I try to be an active mother and do everything for my child while being a single mother. The one thing that I can recommend to any single mother is to not be afraid to ask for help when you need it. As a single mother, you take on the role as mom but also the role of a father. Since we carry so much, we have to know when it’s time to take a step back and take a moment for ourselves.
What advice do you have for women that want to begin to change their lives both inside and out?
I would say to start with finding out exactly what you would like to do. Write it down. There is so much power in writing out your desires. When you see it every day, it’s a constant reminder. I would also suggest taking small steps to achieve that. For my journey, I gained mental strength first but I always had to remind myself of why I started. Giving up was a thought everyday but in retrospect, it all pays off.
