Jill Marie Jones is one of the spectacular leading ladies of Halloween’s biggest television premiere Ash vs. Evil Dead. She plays a zombie ass-kicking detective named “Amanda Fisher,” who is on a mission to put the pieces of her personal life and career back together. The show is expected to do so well that Starz already picked it up for a second season before the first episode was even aired. Jones has made appearances on American Horror Story as well as Sleepy Hollow, but she is best known for her role as the pretentious, yet sarcastically funny, “Toni Childs” on UPN’s (The CW) hit sitcom Girlfriends. The sitcom made her a household name and now Ash vs. Evil Dead is making her a part of a horror series cult classic.
I caught up with Jones as she talked about her inspiration for the role, her love of the horror genre and what we can expect this season.
You play the zombie-killer “Amanda Fisher” tell me about your character Amanda and what it’s like playing a kick-ass woman zombie Killer?
I love it! Amanda Fisher, she’s a bad ass. She is one of the good guys, she fights for good. I love this character because a lot of people don’t know about me, but my mom was a criminal investigator for 40 years. So, there were a lot of qualities in Amanda that I saw growing up in my mother. My mom is not Amanda Fisher, but I saw all that good inside of Amanda and that’s one of the major reasons why I wanted to work on this particular project. There are three female leads on the show and they are all bad asses, they are not waiting on a man to save them and that’s what I really loved as well.
What was your preparation in bringing Amanda Fisher to life on screen? Did you have to take fight lessons or study zombies?
You know it’s funny, I know how to lay down a punch and I know how to take one as well so that was great to come with that but you would think that I had like 10 guns in my purse but I don’t. I never touched a gun in my life and I did some gun training because it was very important for me that I learn how to handle that weapon in the safe way. We have an amazing stunt department and I was learning MMA stuff. I would say I did like 85% of my stunts myself and you’ll be able to see it when you watch the show.
So all the blood and guts don’t bother you?
You know what’s so crazy is that I am so into it! I was like what, blood? More please! I dived right into it! My mother would watch this show whether I was in it or not, it is right up our dark dirty road. I am a huge fan of the horror genre so this is like a dream come true for me. What’s interesting is I’m not queasy with that, but when I watch Grey’s Anatomy, which I am a fan of, every time they are in surgery I turn my head so I can hear the dialogue, but I can’t watch that even though I know it’s make believe.
What can we expect to see this season?
First of all, you are going to be on an amazing ride and we have the amazing Lucy Lawless, which I have a girl crush on. We literally team up and kind of have a beautiful Thelma and Louise moment because we have a Bone to pick with Ash. You see two really strong women and you’re going to be on a ride, its high voltage and there is twists and turns and of course blood will be a character on this show, so there will be blood.
The show has already been picked up for a second season and hasn’t aired yet, that’s pretty cool!
I’m just excited; I’ve been told that the world’s fallen in love with it the way that I have and I’m just really excited because we worked in New Zealand shooting this for 4 months and we’re very proud of it and I’m really proud of it.
Catch the premier of Ash vs Evil Dead tomorrow on Halloween night on Starz.
