I’m not quite sure what it is but when I look at food posts on social media, I get this itching feeling inside of me. I think its the inner chef in me trying to come out. Luckily, I was able to speak to a real chef, Chef Kay Kay! Chef Kay Kay, whose real name is Kayla Greer is a private chef from Los Angeles, California and with every single photo she shares on her social media, she captivates her followers’ taste buds and eyes! I had the opportunity to get to know the chef who is always in the kitchen, wrist twistin’!
Tell us about yourself; is there a moment when you knew that you would become a chef?
Well, my name is Kayla Greer and I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I am the youngest girl of three and I have a little brother. I believe I knew I wanted to become a chef fairly early. It was something I was passionate about. I always enjoyed working in places like Jamba Juice or little cafes. Upon graduating high school, I took it upon myself to go straight into culinary school.
You have traveled to many places but is there one place that surprised you when it came to the food scene?
I just went to Charleston, South Carolina this past summer. I read about it in a magazine that it was the number one city in America. The food there is soo good! I could never find the perfect biscuit recipe and I while I was there I went to this one place that had the best biscuit I’ve ever had in my life. I bought the cookbook and now I know how to make biscuits like a pro (laughs).
What do you believe is the most rewarding aspect of being a chef?
The most rewarding aspect is just being able to spread love. I spread so much love through food, I feel like my energy is everything when it comes to cooking. When I’m cooking for a large number of people, I feel like that is always my biggest reward. The better mood I am in, the better my food is going to taste. I can luckily be surrounded by amazing people all the time. That’s my biggest reward is to just make people happy.
What is your favorite thing to cook or eat?
My favorite thing to cook is curry chicken. I think it is just so delicious (laughs). It is the perfect meal with rice and vegetables. That is probably my favorite thing to cook when people come over. My favorite thing to eat is tacos! I’m from Los Angeles so it’s like all day, every day you can never go wrong with a taco (laughs).
Do you have any advice for aspiring chefs that may be hesitant to make this their career?
I would just say, do it if its something you’re very passionate about. Don’t do it because you just need a job or because you think its easy. It’s not easy, it’s so far from it. If its something you want to do, I would go for it. I would just be prepared for a lot of late nights, early mornings, and a lot of standing on your feet.
Where do you hope to see yourself in the years to come?
In the years to come, I definitely see myself with a restaurant. I also see myself with a major seasoning line, which I am about to drop in the spring. I also see myself with a lot of surprises and merchandise for aspiring private chefs. The future is endless for me, I have so many things I am working on right now that I’m excited to share with everyone. The future is endless!
