Being declared “Atlanta’s best kept secret”, Marica Chisolm is becoming a popular name in the gospel industry. Marica jumped on the gospel scene with her first album Simply Worship, which had an overwhelming amount of support and listeners. With her highly anticipated sophomore album Worship Conversations well on its way, Marica was able to catch up with us to talk about her new single “Favor” and the public’s rave reviews.
How do you feel about the response you’ve gotten on your new single “Favor”?
It’s been overwhelming. It’s incredible to see yourself touch the hearts of so many people.
I mean, at this point in my career I still have a day job. That’s not very common in this industry because you’re made to choose. I believe that also makes me more approachable to my listeners. They know I’m real! I had a young lady come up to me not too long ago and tell me, ‘hey, I love your music! Your new song “Favor” is really great! Can I take a picture with you?’ I was like ‘um yeah I guess so.’ Sometimes I genuinely don’t know how to respond.
What’s something that your fans may not know about you?
I love the beach, but I can’t swim! I know it’s crazy, but I’m fine with just splashing my feet in the water! Ha ha! With all the traveling that I have to do, maybe one day I’ll learn how to swim. MAYBE!
What do you prefer more, worship or praise?
It really just depends on the mood I’m in. Some days I’m filled with emotion and all I want to do is worship. And then there are other days when I’m filled with happiness, and all I want to do is praise, so I do. I can’t say that I do one more than the other because they both go hand-in-hand. It’s about wherever the spirit leads you.
Of course we have to dig in your makeup bag! What is most important to you regarding your beauty regimen before a show?
I really have to be conscious of my skin because I have to wear a lot of make up on stage. So, my health regimen has to stand up to my makeup regimen. Performances require thicker makeup too because I’m bound to sweat.
So what about hair care? Are you into the new wave of natural products?
Well I have dreadlocks all the way down my back, so I have to be hip to the new regimens. I take very good care of my hair and use products that fit my texture. I believe that the natural wave is awesome for a lot of girls, however, let’s be clear; going natural is not for everyone. If you have to slap a perm in your head to get the look you want, girl, go for it. But do what fits you. Everything isn’t for everybody!
What would you say to someone pursuing his or her dreams?
Set realistic goals for yourself, and achieve them. As a gospel artist, to say that my first single needs to sell one million records, I’m not setting a realistic goal. The gospel industry is not a field with platinum selling artists. I know the genre I’m in, so I’m prepared to be realistic. No matter what you pursue, set a realistic goal and achieve it. And at that point, once you get there, you can set another goal for yourself. Keep dreaming, and don’t let anyone talk you out of what you believe you’re called to do. Get a mentor that is doing what you want to do and that will hold you accountable. Invest in yourself and your craft.
