As a journalist, she shares insight on everything from beauty, fashion, entertainment and has quickly made a name for herself in Atlanta, Georgia. Amani will represent the state of Georgia in August as she heads to Missouri to compete in the Miss Black America pageant. In this exclusive interview with Sheen, Amani gives insight into her life and how she plans on using her platform to inspire others.
Can you tell us about yourself?
Well, my name is Amani Sams and I am an educator and journalist. I teach pre-k. On the side, I also submit articles on different online publications such as Trial N Tresses. I’ve also had my work published on Peach State College Sports. In addition, I am an editor of Aman Magazine which features up and coming artists and actors in the Atlanta area. Finally, I am running for Miss Black America, I will be representing the state of Georgia!
When did you know that journalism would become such a big part of your life?
I fell in love with journalism in the ninth grade. It was one of my elective classes where I had a teacher that was so enthusiastic about it. She was always telling us that we could go far in the journalism field and that it was just a matter of hard work and perseverance. I remember we started the class by being featured on the morning news for our school. I just fell in love with it ever since.
What do you believe teaching has taught you about yourself?
Lots of patience. You never know what each day holds. Each child is different and they may be little but they have feelings just like we do. You have to make sure you cater to their needs while also teaching them the basics and fundamentals of life.
As stated, you will be representing the state of Georgia in August as you run for Miss Black America! What are you looking forward to most?
Definitely meeting all of the ladies because they are coming from all over! I’m a people person so I can’t wait to meet everyone. We’ll be able to meet the founder of the organization and the former queens that crowned. It’s going to be a big reunion!
If you were to win the crown title of Miss Black America, how do you want to use your platform to inspire others?
That’s a great question! My platform is heart health. I have spoken at different conventions about heart health. My uncle was affected, he actually had a heart transplant before he passed away. He would go to Emory all the time, where they offered different classes that demonstrated how to live a healthy lifestyle. I would definitely promote that because it is super important.
What else can we expect to see from Amani Sams in the future?
I am planning on writing a book about entrepreneurship. That will come out soon, maybe September so I’m super excited because I’m all about helping other girl bosses! I want to be able to encourage them to never give up even when it get’s hard.
