Brooklyn native, Gwen Beloti is a fashion designer who is here to celebrate women of all shapes and sizes. In order to empower women through the world of fashion, Gwen has created a collection that provides each of her customers a fit that is produced just for her. We sat down with the mastermind behind this fashion powerhouse to discuss her new campaign titled, #HER 2 which was created in order to reach the greater community.
Tell us about yourself and your brand.
My name is Gwen Beloti, Gwen is actually my middle name. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I started designing back in 2008. I went to school originally for psychology for undergrad and graduate degree. I later went back to school for fashion. I currently reside in Brooklyn, I love my city! Gwen Beloti is a womenswear brand and we cater to women who are looking for stylish apparel who are also concerned about fit. There is a specific emphasis on the silhouette that we produce in our apparel.
Did you always know that fashion would become such a big part of your life?
No, I didn’t. I’ve always been into stylish things from a young girl I was always into jewelry and clothing but I never saw myself to be a fashionista or label myself as one. I never saw myself becoming a fashion brand owner. As I got into it, friends and family suggested that I turn it into something that could be profitable so that is how it came about. But no, I never thought about it. I really believe that it fell in my lap. I look at it as a gift and a blessing from God. I’m super appreciative for it and initially when I started design, I was going through a rough time for various reasons in my early 20s and it kind of found me. It was my safe place, my therapeutic experience and I just kept at it since.
Can you tell us about your recently launched campaign, #HER 2.
HER is really all about being transparent. I recently went on a journey of my own. I lost close to 70 pounds and it wasn’t just about the weight and the diet. It was a lifestyle change for me. I learned a lot about myself. When I initially started designing, the clothing that I made was for women of all sizes. When you looked at the brand, it wasn’t obvious that the designer herself was a woman of a certain size, you know? It’s so important to be transparent, people see through fakeness and I just wanted to be authentic. As I found myself, the brand also found a voice. It was my opportunity to celebrate the everyday woman. The campaign is about appreciating her needs and her wants.
Fit concerns don’t only pertain to weight. Women have presences on how they want their clothes to wear and what they want to accentuate or not. That’s why the campaign features women of all sizes and body types.
Your brand has a very special message but what is it exactly you want your consumers to take away from your brand?
I want consumers to think about Gwen Beloti when they’re looking for their go-to outfit for a date night, New Year’s Eve, you name it. I want Gwen Beloti to be that holistic brand for our customer.
What can we expect from you and your brand in the future?
We just launched new products for this season. It is a three-piece suit that can be worn in six different ways. I’m really excited about that! Over the course of this month, we will be rolling out new products. We have a pop-up shop coming up in December that will be hosted in Brooklyn. At the start of 2019, we will be gearing up for the community project that we run annually. There will be a lot of new initiatives and continuing to work on things we have in the past as well.
