He’s best known for his success and being the ultimate powerhouse in the R&B world in the late 90s and early 2000s. Artist, Avant has released seven albums since the release of hit singles such as “Separated” and “Read Your Mind.” This weekend, TV One will premiere a special feature on the R&B sensation himself! In this exclusive interview with Sheen, Avant gave us insight on what all we could expect on the special episode! In addition, Avant discussed with us how he has evolved over the years and what you can expect from him in the future.
Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself? When did you know that music would become such a big part of your life?
Readers, my name is Myron Avant, I’m from Cleveland, Ohio. I got into music at an early age. My mom had me listening to the classic, the greats such as Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, people like that and I just got an itch and I couldn’t get it off. It was beautiful thing and from that point on, I just kept on fighting hard. I spent a lot of time in small town studios in Cleveland until I reached Chicago where I got to something nice and legible and we simply did our thing.
How do you believe you have evolved since first debuting your hit single, “Separated” in 1998?
Well, the way I have evolved is just by living life. When I wrote “Separated,” it was supposed to be a poem. My manager at the time was like, “Man, you have to make this into a song.” I was hesitant because I felt like no one wanted to hear my growing pains (laughs) But, at the end of the day, that’s exactly what people wanted to hear. That is what sparked the whole writing thing. I knew I had to start writing. It was a process I had to understand and once I did, it just took off from there.
You will be featured on TV One’s UNSUNG this weekend! What can viewers expect to see?
Viewers can expect to see the nature of the business. I never signed directly in with a company. I signed with a subsidiary company. Magic Johnson had a company inside of MCA Records. By signing that way, you’re never really the main focus. I talked a lot on that and how I had to keep myself relevant in the company because they had other people that they signed themselves. I would always put a record out there even if it was me putting it out there myself to keep my space out there which benefited me in the end.
Lastly, what can we all expect from Avant in the future? Are there any projects you can share with us?
I have a lot of different things going on. I stay out on the road doing tours but I’m also tied into this book that a young man named, Vincent Dixon wrote called, The Trail of Mankind. It is a book that discusses the mistreatment of animals. Dixon created an enchanted forest where the animals can speak back. It’s very interesting and fun. If you can, be sure to pick up the book!
Be sure to tune into TV One on Sunday, April 8th at 9/8C! You don’t want to miss this!
