Shavone Riggins is taking the billion dollar hair industry by storm — unapologetically. SHEEN had the opportunity to speak with her about her life and journey, and what it took to build a successful hair career from scratch. Here’s what she had to say.
Who is Shavone Riggins?
Shavone Riggins is a woman, a mother, an entrepreneur, a mentor, a woman of power, a woman in power. I’m the girl behind the curl.
I love the fact that you said that you are a “woman of power”. Anytime a woman is a female entrepreneur, she is in fact a woman who is moving in that of power. I really do love that you have embraced that. What’s passion that you possess so strongly for helping women with their hair?
The first thing I did was create a blog. I did demonstrations on it. I then started looking into protective styling. I decided that if I did do protective styling that I wanted to wear something that looks and feels like my natural hair. I came across the crochet bread method. I would wear the afro look. So, it was very important to me that I created convenience for me, but most importantly, the look and feel. I cannot stress that enough. I had to have the curly look.
When did you realize that you had tapped into something big?
My background is in marketing and also branding. I do have a background of knowing how to package a brand, and when to launch a brand. My skillset gave me a lot of faith in what I believed could be something that would blow up. Because during that time, there was a huge embracing of the natural hair look. Natural hair was so big in the year 2014 and 2015. I knew that there was a market. So, I had to create strategic marketing to reach that particular market. So, a lot of it was faith. However, I paid attention to what the market was saying. I didn’t think it would go as far as it has. But, I am truly grateful and humbled that it has.
Tell me about a time when you felt discouraged in your business?
There were times when we would have a sale, and it would hit so hard. I started questioning myself, “Like, can I do this?” But, ultimately, I kept the faith. I never look at anything and think I can’t get pass any obstacle. I kept the faith, and work with my great staff and made it happen. Whatever it was. We made it happen. We always make it happen.
What advice would you give to that female entrepreneur who wants to give up?
I would say to that woman take notes of everything that you are doing. Everything that you are struggling with, there is something for you to learn from. Stop. Get the lesson. Take the lessons as bricks that you step on. Be a entrepreneur that is constantly learning. Stay abreast. And don’t ever give up.
