She is the ultimate power house and a woman we can’t help but hold in respect for. Montez Teferi and her family were hit with not one but TWO of hurricanes this past year. Hurricane Irma and Maria not only affected her life but her business, Taitu’s Botanicals. At a time when you would think would be the hardest, Teferi pushed through the disaster and now, more than ever is determined to grow her business. We sat down with Montez Teferi who gave us just a small of glimpse of all she’s had to go through and how she’s using her challenges to reach her highest potential.
Could you tell our readers a little bit about yourself and the idea behind starting up Taitu’s Botanicals?
Taitu’s Botanicals is primarily a body care company. We manufacture natural, herbal body care products. We focus on wellness and lifestyle products. I ended up getting into the spa industry and it has been over 20 years. I’ve worked as a massage therapist and I am a wellness coach. The natural products are an extension of what I was already providing.
Do you mind sharing your experience with Hurricane Irma and Maria and the impact it had on your business?
Wow… Huricane Irma and Maria… First of all, I would say that the impact it had on my business was a complete shutdown. The first two months, there was no postal service whatsoever. In terms of shipping and handling, everything was at a standstill. More importantly, in my home I had no electricity for three and a half months after the storm. In the past few weeks, it has become a little bit more stable but there are frequent power outages as they try to bring more people on the grid because there are still many here that have no electricity. Communication, social media, shipping, all of that was pretty much shut down. Our mail here is routed through Puerto Rico and as you know Puerto Rico was severely damaged from Hurricane Irma and Maria.
It is obvious you have faced many hardships, what advice would you give to those that struggle with the challenges life throws their way?
The first thing I would say is to have hope in all that is still working. Comparatively speaking, I still have a home, I still have a roof over my head and a lot of people can’t say that. Be open to try something new in order to fulfill obligations. I took on different types of work in order to maintain contractors that work with me. Lastly, make plans. Make plans for when things change.
What can we expect from Taitu’s Botanicals this year?
This year, we are coming out a with a few new fragrances. We’re also adding different aspects to the newsletter and blogs so that it will be more incompetent with all of the different products we have. I also put out a book that focuses wellness, health, and energy giving foods. We’re going to try to incorporate all of those aspects under one umbrella.
