Tell us about your character, Ryan.
“Ryan” is the woman who really has it all from the outside. People have gotten so caught up in the outside perception that I think she just decided that’s what her identity is. She decided to go with her friends on a girls trip, she’s been missing that part of her life for various reasons. You kind of see her problems unravel in New Orleans, and something else happens. The trip brings her back to who she is, and that becomes really important to her, you know?
Can you have it all?
I mean, I don’t really know. I guess it depends on what your definition of “all” is. Some people when they say “have it all” they’re referring to kids, a career, and a husband, externally. But I think having it all is an internal place, a place of success from within. I think the destination changes as you evolve and mature.
How was it working with your co-stars Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, and Jada Pinkett Smith?
Oh they were great! I feel really blessed to have had the experience. It was like we were on a real girls trip, like we really knew each other! That was tremendously special. Also, one of the best parts of shooting is working with people you admire, it was amazing.
Will Packer refers to this as Tiffany Haddish’s “breakout role”. How was it with her on set, and the comedic element she brought to the cast?
Tiffany was great; so talented and spontaneous. It was a real pleasure because I’d met her before. Experiencing all her talents and a fresh face to match? Amazing.
Can’t forget about that unbelievable chemistry between you and Larenz Tate! Were you friends before this film?
No, we actually had never met before! It was so much fun working with Larenz, I mean he’s really great. He’s another person in this movie who I feel will always be a part of my life. I liked the two characters together, Julian and Ryan, and their story. I had this whole complex at first like, “why don’t they ever kiss?” The director Malcolm said “well, Ryan is married, and he is respectful.” So we had to really focus on portraying the chemistry to the audience, which was great. I’ve always been a fan of Larenz, he’s so talented and a real cutie, so it was easy. (laughs)
When was the last time you took a girl’s trip with your friends?
You know, it’s been way too long, probably years! I will say though, after shooting the movie, I decided to plan one. So I’m actually in the midst of planning that now!
