Tamika Douglas is ultimate superwoman. Not only is Tamika a businesswoman, but she’s also a mother that has always put her children first! We’re applauding Tamika for being the go-getter and boss she is in her successful business. Often referred to as “Mommy Mogul,” Tamika created Four Star Tresses, an online hair boutique that was created for every woman that wanted to feel glamorous on the inside and out! In this exclusive interview with Sheen, Douglas opens up to Sheen about her experience as a serial entrepreneur while being a single mother and what sets Four Star Tresses apart from others!
Do you mind telling our readers a little bit about yourself?
Well, my name is Tamika Douglas and I am a serial entrepreneur. This is my fourth business. I am also the mom of a child performer who has taken me all across the country. I have decided to start this luxury online hair brand as a way to empower myself while I get to support his dream. As you must realize, in order to maintain a 9-5 and have a son who is on tour is kind of impossible. One of the reasons I decided to start this line was to be able to empower myself, make myself feel beautiful as well as be able to support my sons’ dream.
What are your best-sellers from Four Star Tresses?
Our top sellers are the Brazilian Body Wave, European Blonde, and the Loose Wave.
You use the words “Mommy Mogul” to describe yourself. How would you describe being a successful woman while being a single parent in the business world?
Oh, it’s tough. (laughs) To find the balance is tough because as I said, my son’s career itself is demanding. He’s a Broadway performer; he just finished The Bodyguard tour with Deborah Cox where he played Fletcher who was like Whitney Houston’s son in the movie. I have two children so I decided to work on my own and I have been doing so for the past 13 years because I wanted to afford for my children to pursue their dreams. My son, at a very young age knew what he wanted to do in life. He was four years old when he said he wanted to do what he saw people doing on television. I’ve made myself available and created for him. Everything he wanted to pursue, I offered him a program until he found exactly what it was that he wanted to do which primarily was dance. Having my own business and creating outlets for him has given me the opportunity to support his dream and give me the flexibility to do what I need to do for both my boys.
Could you offer your best advice for single mothers or mothers in general who may have the same dream you did to start their own businesses?
It’s all about finding the balance. I was fortunate to enough to buy my home at a young age. I bought a family home when my son was six months old. I turned my basement into a daycare and that was my first venture into entrepreneurship. Prior to that I did social work and I worked with my mother’s company. When I had my son, I realized how much time I was spending away from him and I didn’t want to do the same thing that I had to go through. Both of my parents were entrepreneurs and they work very hard, even to this day. They provided me with a beautiful life but I had little time spent with them. That was the main reason I wanted to work for myself. It’s all about finding the right balance.
