Chris Rock’s opening monologue was just as we expected it to be: eye opening and hilarious. There’s no secret that people expected Rock to open the floodgates about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy but he handled it in true Chris Rock fashion.
“Hollywood is sorority racist. It’s like: ‘We like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa.’ That’s how Hollywood is, but things are changing. Things are changing. Yeah, we’ve got a black ‘Rocky’ this year. Some people call it ‘Creed.’ I call it ‘Black Rocky,’” said Rock.
In other big news, Leo DiCaprio finally won and received an Oscar for Best Actor for “The Revenant” and Stacey Dash announced “Happy Black History Month!” to the surprise of the audience.
The black celebrities that did attend the Academy awards were still interested in being a part of change in the Hollywood community.
Ms. Olivia Pope herself, Kerry Washington, said “I really want to be part of the conversation to make sure there’s institutional change so that we never have a year like this again, so that we can be as inclusive as possible.”
Not only were the Academy Awards a big event for Hollywood last night but, there was also Russell Simmons’ All Def Movie Awards on Fusion celebrating some of the cinematic accomplishments of minorities that weren’t mentioned at the Oscars.
The year seems like a turning point in Hollywood and we’re excited to see what’s to come!
