Dolce and Gabbana released their Fall/Winter 2022 media campaign and the reactions are mixed. Why is a fashion house known for its classic elegant aesthetic now venturing out into true street fashion wear? Is it another form of appropriation? Black, Afro-Latin, and other POC designers are not receiving credit for their originality and fresh take on streetwear fashions. Naomi Alabi, the founder, and producer of Street Fashion Week Runway and Creative TV realized the need for an outlet allowing emerging designers a place to showcase their creations. It is a fashion space that is long overdue and needed during New York Fashion Week.
Ms. Alabi also offers funding, business classes, and opportunities for designers needing to understand the back-end office side of fashion, one that is often neglected by creatives. This year SFW Runway was held at the Daylight Studios, a beautifully lit open loft, the perfect backdrop to the varying colorful styles seen on the catwalk this year. SFW Runway also had the privilege of presenting two designers that are featured in HBO’s “The Hype” where they compete for $150,000 and are judged by Offset, Beth Gibbs, and Marni Senofonte. The winner will be announced at the end of this month.

Noor Design Official-Nicaraguan-born and Miami-based designer, Noor Design delivered Latin flair with her choice of purple, lilacs, and prints. Her collection included athleisure to evening wear for men, and women, and fluidity to share garments regardless of gender.

DifferentRegard-Baltimore-based designers, Steven White and Dominick Davis, started their journey in 2011 to offer high-end clothing to men, women, and non-gender clientele. Syeko Design House-Maryland bred designer, Brandi Lewis, is a graduate of the Art Institute of Philadelphia and is reflected in the artistry of her garments. Ms. Lewis repurposes vintage clothing and accessories and may add up to 15 layers of paint to one blazer. Her collection is the perfect example of wearable art and is definitively gallery worthy.
