You may know her as the matriarch of the Cooper Family, Duana Cooper is the true representation of beauty and grace. Many know the family as The Curly Coopers on YouTube. This adorable bunch has soared high in their family vlogs on YouTube and people just can’t get enough! In an exclusive interview with Sheen, Duana Cooper gives us insight on just what it’s like to share the life of her family on YouTube. Within the first few moments, we fell head over heels for this strong, lovable mommy who is constantly putting her husband and children first!
Could you tell us about yourself and your husband Curtis? How did you two meet?
Curtis and I have been together for going on 14 years, and we’ve been married for 10. It’s been a long time so we have really grown up together. (laughs) I was 17 years-old when I first met Curtis and and he was 18. I saw him two years before we actually started dating. We had a mutual best friend who was graduating and I was standing afar. While talking to my friend, I spotted him and pointed him out and said said, “That boy right there is my future husband.” He didn’t’ know me or anything so as I’m talking to our mutual friend, Curtis actually comes over. When she introduced us to one another, he just said, “Hey.” That was it. (laughs) A month later, I called her and she told me that he was actually over at the house. I told her not to tell him that I liked him. Of course, she told him and soon later they came over and the rest is history!
How did the idea come about for you and your family to share your life on YouTube?
Well, we were always getting questions from others about our family, mainly about how I maintain our children’s curly hair. I started a YouTube channel and at first, I wasn’t okay with vlogging but I record everything and I decided one day that I just wanted to share with the world. I just did it! (laughs)
Have you and Curtis received any hate because of your interracial marriage? If so, how do you two find the inspiration to push through?
This is an interesting question because we get this question a lot. To me, I don’t think an interracial couple because Curtis’ father is African-American and his mom is German. We grew up pretty much the same, I don’t see it but I see how others do from first glance. We haven’t received in person hate but on YouTube, everyone receives some kind of hate. They’ll say anything, “Why are you with this white guy”? or “Why are you mixing races”? It’s called block and delete. That is your best friend. Curtis and I don’t want to respond to the hate because people love that, we’re not going to entertain that.
Can you share anything you believe your children have taught you?
My kids have taught me patience, especially when it comes to cooking. Before I had children, I used to watch my nieces and nephews and they used to drive me crazy because I’m very cautious. Curtis taught me that once we had children of our own, I had to learn to relax and let them make the mess because its all about the experience. So, when we’re making homemade cookies, it’s okay if it gets a little messy.
You handle motherhood with such grace, how are you able to keep it together for your family?
Keeping God first, in our home and in our family. That is the biggest thing I can tell anyone. We always go to church, read our Bibles, study our Bible together as a family as well as individually. We try to spend all of our quality time together as a family. When Curtis is not at school or at work, we try to spend as much time together as possible.
What advice would you give to those who struggle with the opinions of others in their relationship preferences?
This is a good one… Do not care what others think or say. I know that seems easy to say but you have to worry about your own happiness. We live by this motto, you only have one life to live. Make the most out of it. You may not be where you want to be in life but you just have to make the most out of what you have now. Someone is always going to have something to say regardless of who you’re with. It does not matter.
