We’ve just learned that Jay-Z and Will Smith are teaming up to produce an exciting new project!
Deadline has shared that the two will bring a new television series to ABC that will chronicle the Civil Rights Movement. The best part about it is that the stories will be told about the women behind it all.
In the first season of the series, viewers will follow the story of Emmett Till’s mother, Mamie Till. Mamie spent her life seeking justice for her son after he was murdered in 1955. This part of the series was written by Marissa Jo Cerar and is inspired by Devery S. Anderson’s book, Emmett Till: The Murder that Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement.
Over 60 years ago, Emmett Till was kidnapped and murdered by Roy Bryant and his brother, J.W. Milam when Roy’s wife, Carolyn Bryant accused the 14-year-old boy of whistling at her in a grocery store in Mississippi.
Both Roy and his brother were acquitted by an all-white jury for the horendus murder. The two later confessed to the crime in an interview with Look Magazine.
In addition to that, in 2017, Carolyn Bryant admitted that she lied and acknowledged the fact that her false statement caused the child’s death.
At Emmett’s funeral, his mother requested an open-casket viewing so that people could see his beaten body.
At this time, a release date for the series has not been announced.
