Can you tell our readers a little about yourself?
I am Re’biana Thorpe, but known as Re’biana Symone on YouTube. I’m 23-years old and I’m from Savannah, Georgia. Just last week, I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Public Relations from Georgia Southern University, finally!
How did you end up on YouTube?
I’ve always wanted a YouTube channel. I remember mentioning to my friends and sister and they actually thought that it would be a good idea for me to do it, especially because I have the girly girl type of personality to have my own beauty content on YouTube. I got my first camera from my pop-pop. He’s really into cameras and he gave me his old handy-cam and a tripod for me start my channel. I remember my first video (December 2015). When I look back on it, it was very cheesy (laughs) it makes me cringe. It wasn’t a hair video, it was a tag video. Honestly, I went on YouTube not knowing exactly what it was that I wanted to do. But here I am today, doing strictly everything hair! I do plan to branch off my channel now that I have graduated college and will have a lot of time on my hands. My subscribers are really pushing me into the makeup YouTube world so I think I will be trying that out very soon to see how that works for my YouTube channel.
What would you say is your favorite part about being an influencer online?
My favorite part about being an influencer is the overwhelming love and support that I get from people all over the world. I just love that there are people who actually love what I do and watch my videos every single time I post. Another one of my favorite parts about being an influencer is getting contacted by brands, for example, Sheen Magazine! I would have never thought to get reached out by Sheen Magazine’s Web Content Editor, asking to do an online feature. It’s like you never know who is running across your YouTube channel, watching your videos. I’ve also have been getting reached out from top clothing brands and black owned hair companies, that I can’t wait to work with Summer 2018.
What is your least favorite?
My least favorite would have to be the negative comments. I would also say the horrible customer service from the hair companies that reach out to me. You guys won’t believe how many business emails I receive requesting hair reviews that are unprofessional…
As an influencer, you’re bound to receive negative criticism from some. How do you push through the hate you may receive and still find the motivation to continue creating content?
Well I have a beauty channel, specifically focused on hair. I really don’t get that much hate comments towards me. Most of my comments are 99% positive and 1% negative. But the negative comments that I do receive, I read and then delete them. Now I do think that there is a difference between a hate comment and constructive criticism (which is what I am okay with). I mostly delete hate comments, you know like the weird people who comes on your channel and are just abruptly rude. But with the personality that I have, hate comments will not stop me from creating content on my YouTube channel.
What is your holy grail hair product?
My holy grail hair product would have to be my Ghost Bond Glue and my Got 2 B glued blasting spray. I use these products in all of my YouTube videos. You can get the Got2B blasting spray from Walmart, Target, Walgreens, etc. The Ghost Bond Glue would have to be purchased online from Amazon. The bottle is very small and you may think that is expensive, but a little goes a long way. You can also remove it will rubbing alcohol. These two products together work miracles, and your wig won’t move if you use these products. You need these two products ALL SUMMER 18. (laughs)
What is your holy grail makeup product.
To be honest, I don’t necessarily have one at the moment but something that I use every time I apply makeup is the Smashbox primer. It just makes my face feel so smooth before applying my makeup. Another thing that I can’t do without applying my makeup is highlighting. I have to highlight my inner eyes, the bridge of my nose, eyebrow bone, and the highpoints of my cheek. Girl if you aren’t highlighting this summer, what are you doing?
