Tell us a little about yourself. What inspired you to create your YouTube channel?

I’m Lanie, I’m 23-years-old. I live in Los Angeles now but I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I was born and raised.

My dad actually recorded my entire childhood. He recorded like almost everyday of my sister and I’s childhood. I just got so used to being on camera. I loved it and was comfortable with it. I loved making short films when I was little, I showed them to my whole class. That introduced my love for cameras and journalism, I’ve always wanted to be a talk show host. I was on YouTube one day and I didn’t really know that much about makeup. I looked up a review and I quickly realized that there was a whole beauty community on YouTube. The next day, I filmed myself on my webcam and just edited it to upload. I filmed a “get ready with me routine” and used my mom’s makeup because I didn’t know anything about it.I just posted it and kept posting! Somehow I started getting a following, I honestly don’t know how. I remember reaching 1,000 subscribers and since then it’s like it has become a blur (laughs).

What is something most of your subscribers don’t know about you?

Okay, this is something that actually a lot of people don’t know about me except for my childhood friends. I actually really love to sing. I used to write songs when I was little and record them on my recorder, I even taught myself how to use the keyboard. It was my first passion. I still love to sing but I was super shy about it until like this year (laughs). I do want to upload covers soon, I just need to find the right songs.

How are you able to find the courage to share your life on the internet?

As I said, I was very comfortable with the camera. I always wanted to be a talk show host. I knew that YouTube was the best platform to do that. I majored in journalism and have a degree in it but that definitely helped me get my foot in the door. I knew that it was my goal in life. It is definitely strange sometimes like especially if I run into someone that may recognize me and I look a hot mess (laughs). I still love it because I love that I can talk to people and that people can relate to me. Luckily, I think I have amazing subscribers because they’re not mean to me (laughs). They’re super encouraging and if anything they give me really great tips. They make it easy for me. I think the fact that my community is so welcoming and nice, it makes this a lot easier.

Sheen Magazine is the Ultimate Beauty Guide for the Modern Day Woman, do you mind sharing your holy grail products?

I’m going to chose a top three because I have a lot but these are products I use every single day (laughs). I have my GlamGlow Illuminating Moisturizer – it is my everyday moisturizer, it smells so good, it makes my face glow, and it is a great base for my foundation application. Next, is the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Foundation. I think that is everyone’s favorite. I didn’t like it at first but my skin somehow adapted to it and loves it, it is like the only foundation that works for my skin. Lastly, the Laura Mercier Loose Translucent Setting Powder – it changed the game for me because I have oily skin. It is the only powder that makes me matte all day and doesn’t make me cakey.

Do you think being an influencer online has taught you anything about yourself that you didn’t know beforehand?

Yes! It actually showed me how much of a perfectionist I am (laughs). I didn’t realize I was. I will record a video for four hours, edit the entire thing, and then not post it because I’ll notice something small that no one would notice. Sometimes I’ll be like whatever and post it and the things that I was worried about, no one even notices. One of my most popular videos is the ‘Drunk vs. High’ makeup challenge and I wasn’t going to post the video because I knew it was bad! That turned out to be one of my most successful videos. I’ve learned it’s okay to be a perfectionist but sometimes you really just need to let go.

I’ve also learned how hard I can push myself. I’ve always known that when you practice something you will become good at it but I learned how to do makeup solely from YouTube. I kept practicing and that led me to work on music sets, work with amazing artists, and meet people and brands. I never thought that I would be into makeup like that. I’ve learned that perfecting your craft can really lead you to some amazing places.

What do you see yourself accomplishing in the years to come?

I have a lot of passions, that is both a good and bad thing. There are so many things I love to do. I’m really interested in makeup, I do want to start a makeup line one day. I would still love to be a talk show host, that was my first dream in life and I still love talking to people and journalism so that is one of my goals. I have a ton of different goals but I think that once you really build your brand and people know you and trust you, I think you can really do anything with your career. I want to build my brand and have a trustworthy community so that when I do other things they will be there to support me.
