Famous for her beauty tutorials on YouTube, Lisette or Luhhsetty as her followers know her, truly exemplifies the meaning of beauty from within. With over 1.3 million subscribers to her channel, Lisette has made her mark in the beauty world of YouTube. SHEEN spoke with Lisette exclusively to get to know the online sensation beyond the camera.

Do you mind sharing how you got into the world of YouTube?

Well, I used to be obsessed with watching YouTube videos. I watched them every day after school and any chance I got. I looked up to all of the people I watched but the only thing was that I didn’t see women on there that I could identify myself to. There weren’t many mixed girls with curly hair that looked like my curl type, it was like I didn’t have a role model. I just decided to make a video because, why not? After making the video, I actually forgot about it. I checked it a few months later and it had about 30,000 views along with requests for other videos. From that point, I just started to create videos and I discovered that I could make what I love into a career.

You’ve just reached one million subscribers! When you began your journey on YouTube, what was your initial goal?

When I started YouTube, I honestly just did it because I like to do it.  I didn’t understand how much power people had until I realized what people were saying. It hit me that I have a platform where others look up to me. It’s like a grew into that role for others. I didn’t ever think I was going to reach a million subscribers. I just did me and it just kept going up.

What advice would you give to young girls or women that aren’t as confident to rock their natural hair?

It’s hard because I know what it’s like to not think that you’re beautiful with your curls. I really understand the struggle. What people have to understand is that your hair is literally growing from your scalp. It’s not like you can ever in any way possible change the way your hair grows. You can manipulate it to do whatever you want it to be but at the end of the day, it’s your genetics and who you are. With time, you just have to learn to love it. You can’t tell others how to love it, they just have to accept who they are, accept their hair, their background and initially accept themselves.

What would you say is your favorite part about being an influencer on social media and what do you often find yourself struggling with?

My favorite part would have to be just the positive emails and messages I get from others on how I may have inspired them to love their body, their hair, ethnicity, just girls that have struggled. I love that YouTube gives me the opportunity to have a connection with people. My biggest struggle would have to be continuing to find inspiration. It’s hard for everyone because a lot of us are trying to do the same thing. It’s hard for me to make myself seen by staying original.

Sheen Magazine is the Ultimate Beauty Guide, at the moment, what is your holy grail item?

That’s hard… Right now, I’m loving the Curl Enhancing Smoothie from Shea Moisture. You can never go wrong with it. For my hair, it’s just perfect.
