As the world grows ever more connected—and, paradoxically, more overwhelming—conversations about mental health have never been more crucial. This May, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we sit down with Dr. Tavari Brown, Ph.D., LPC, MPH, CPCS, whose unique blend of public health acumen and counseling expertise has made her a nationally recognized voice in the field. From her impactful work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to her role as a sought-after corporate trainer, Dr. Brown is dedicated to equipping individuals and organizations with practical tools for managing anxiety, building resilience, and fostering well-being.
What simple coping strategies do you recommend for managing daily stress?
Dr. Brown: Getting out in nature. Get out of your head and reconnect with the world
Why is it important to talk openly about mental health?
Dr. Brown: Shame thrives in darkness. When we speak openly, it allows the fears to exit our body and promotes connection with others who have a shared experience.
What advice do you have for parents concerned about their teens’ mental well-being?
Dr. Brown: Begin with an open dialogue. Reaffirm how much your child is loved and supported, and help them acknowledge any changes that have occurred in their behaviors, interests, friends, or habits.
How has the conversation around mental health changed in recent years?
Dr. Brown: People are far more open to talking about their experiences. We have TikTok therapy, the Pixar movie Inside/Out, and songs like Dochii’s anxiety to help normalize symptomology. If anything, people are over self-diagnosing.
