Houston-based Dermatology Physician Assistant Omni McCluney brings over seven years of expertise in medical, cosmetic, and surgical dermatology, following an early career in family practice. A graduate of Emory University School of Medicine, Ms. McCluney’s professional journey took a personal turn after her diagnosis with a rare autoimmune disease and a life-saving double lung transplant. Inspired by her own recovery and the challenges she faced, she founded Resilience Skin and Beauty—a skincare line dedicated to those with sensitive or medically-affected skin. Through her work and her memoir, “Of All Things,” Ms. McCluney champions hope, healing, and holistic care for all.
What is your proudest business accomplishment?
McCluney: My proudest business accomplishment was creating Resilience Skin and Beauty. I would talk, dream, and write on my vision board about how I wanted to create a skin care line that was for skin of color that suffered from sensitive skin issues due to medications or autoimmune conditions. The fact that I was able to create this line after going through everything that I have gone through is so impressive to myself.
Tell us about your product and who can benefit from it.
McCluney: Retinol Renew is a clean facial cream that is made of Ferulic Acid, Vitamin C, BRetinol Renew is a clean facial cream that is made of Ferulic Acid, Vitamin C, Bakuchiol Oil, and Retinol. This is designed for those with sensitive skin who often have trouble using retinol ingredients. The Ferulic Acid stabilizes Vitamin C, making it last longer and working better on the skin. The Bakuchiol oil has the same properties as Retinol does, but it is a lot less harsh than retinol, which, when used with retinol is calms the retinol side effects down, making it more tolerable for those with sensitive skin. This product is designed to reverse hyperpigmentation, shrink pores, heal scars, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Do you believe in work-life balance? If so, how do you maintain it?
McCluney: Absolutely, I believe in work-life balance. Fortunately, the Dermatology specialty offers probably the best work-life balance compared to other specialties. I manage by working 4 days a week, with one of the days being half a day. I also try to travel as much as possible, even if it is getting away for a short 3-day trip to just disconnect from my reality.
What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring new entrepreneurs?
McCluney: Continue to just move in the direction that you want to go, continue to pour into your business. Have faith and never give up, because you never know when your breakthrough will happen.
Who is your business role model? Why?
McCluney: I have many, my mentor Dr. Milton D. Moore, Monique Rodriguez, Founder of Mielle, Shontay Lundy, Founder of Black Girl Sunscreen, Pinky Cole, Founder of Slutty Vegan. But my top Business Role Model would have to be Oprah Winfrey. How she came from poverty to being the first African American female billionaire is incredible. With the amount of adversity she faced during her lifetime, she embodies true resilience, and someone I have always admired and aspire to be like in the business world.
