In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we highlight Timika Goodson, Founder and CEO of Diverse Health—a virtual care company dedicated to delivering culturally competent primary care and mental health services to underserved communities nationwide. Drawing from her background as a Black woman, mother, and military spouse, Timika leads Diverse Health’s expansion across 30+ states, championing equitable healthcare and bridging care gaps for thousands of patients.

Why did you pursue a career in healthcare?

Goodson: I wanted to be the provider I never had growing up—someone who listens, understands, and advocates. My lived experience as a Black woman who has faced trauma, adversity, and systemic gaps inspired me to make care more compassionate and culturally aware.

What is the mission statement for your company?

Goodson: Diverse Health exists to close care gaps and rebuild trust in healthcare by delivering culturally competent, tech-enabled care that meets people where they are.

Do you believe in work-life balance? If so, how do you maintain it?

Goodson: Yes, I believe in work-life rhythm more than balance. As a mom and wife, I create space for both ambition and motherhood by building routines, setting boundaries, and giving myself grace.

Can you share some of the biggest mental health challenges you see in the communities you serve, and how your platform helps address them?

Goodson: We see high rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma rooted in racism, economic hardship, and social isolation. Our platform makes it easier to connect with providers who understand those lived experiences – because cultural connection is key to mental wellness.

What are some barriers that minority communities face in accessing healthcare, and how does telehealth help overcome them?

Goodson: Barriers include transportation, time off work, provider bias, and fear of being dismissed. Telehealth helps by reducing logistical hurdles and expanding access to providers who are trained in cultural competence and equity.
